He studied at Galway grammar school and at Queens College Galway . He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin Trinity College , Dublin with a Bachelor of Arts B.A. in 1864, an Masters degree M.A. in 1871, a Bachelors degree B.D. in 1881, and a Doctor of Divinity D.D. in 1886. Stokes was vicar of All Saints, in Newtown Park , Dublin, from 1868&ndash 1898. In 1880 he became assistant to the Regius Professor of Divinity, and in 1883 became Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Trinity College, Dublin.
