Frederick Macmillan commenting on Brett resignation letter said We have all been profoundly touched by your letter . . . it is a great achievement for a man to go through this life with a spotless reputation & to be successful in what he sets himself to do. You will have succeeded in both these aims, and whatever fortune may have in store for the New York Agency, we shall not forget who it was that brought it through troublous times. Philatelic literature Brett contributed over five hundred articles to philatelic journals. He authored several books on postage stamps and their printing, including The Giori Press A Comprehensive Study of Current Stamp Production at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1961, and Printing Methods and Techniques in 1985. Philatelic activity Brett was active in the philatelic community. He was president of the United States Stamp Society previously called the Bureau Issues Association during 1966 and 1967, then continued on as chairman and emeritus chairman until his death. And from 1961 to 1963 he was a member of the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee . Honors and awards Brett was honored with the Lichtenstein Medal in 1983, the Luff Award for distinguished philatelic research in 1978, and numerous other awards. He was named to the Writers Hall of Fame in 1979 and the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 2006.     George Edward Ayscough died 1779 , was a dramatist and traveller. Ayscough was the son of Dr. Francis Ayscough , dean of Bristol , by a sister of the first Lord Lyttelton . For some time he held a commission in the Guards. In 1776 he produced at Drury Lane Theatre a version of the Semiramis of Voltaire, Mr. Yates representing the chief character an epilogue was provided by Sheridan. The tragedy obtained eleven representations, and the English author enjoyed three benefits on account of it. On the first performance Captain Ayscough s brother officers attended in great force and secured the success of Semiramis. In the Biographia Dramatica Ayscough is described as a fool of fashion, a parasite of Lord Lyttelton and his tragedy is condemned as contemptible. He left England on account of his failing health, and afterwards published some account of his travels in Italy. He was the editor of the Miscellaneous Works of his uncle, Lord Lyttelton, published in 1774.     Unreferenced date August 2008 Charles George Edward Patey Order of St Michael and St George CMG 27 February 1811 1881 was born at Chivelstone in Devon , England on 27 February 1811. The eldest son of Commander Charles Patey RN, the young Charles followed his father into the navy at the age of 13, passing through every commissioned Military rank rank in the service to eventually be made an Admiral of the Royal Navy . In addition to his distinguished naval record, Admiral Patey was also appointed Administrator of Lagos , and of the Gambia , as well as serving as Governor of Saint Helena between 1869 and 1873. In recognition of his services Admiral Patey was awarded the Order of St Michael and St George Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1874. Admiral Patey died in 1881 at Newton St. Loe, a small village just outside Bath, Somerset Bath . F. Benson of that city. He obtained a situation in the Stamp Office in 1809, and, having resigned this appointment, entered the Excise Office, which he also left of his own accord in 1817 in which year he became a contributor to Woollers Reasoner. The following year he married Mary Ann Shadgett c1798 1820 , and wrote several criticisms and verses for the Weekly Review, then edited by his brother in law, William Shadgett. He contributed to the Literary Chronicle and the Imperial Magazine under the signature E. G. B., and to the Literary Magnet and the World of Fashion under that of . He published in 1825 a volume entitled A New Series of Original Poems and a few years after another entitled Microscopic Amusements. He was exceedingly fond of research. Robert Benson barrister Robert Benson , his cousin, and Hatcher received no small help from him in writing their History of Salisbury 1843 , which formed part of Hoare s Wiltshire. He helped John Gough Nichols in the works undertaken for the Camden Society .
