Scotism In scholastic metaphysics , a formal distinction is a distinction intermediate between what is merely conceptual, and what is fully real or mind independent. It was made by some realist philosophers of the Scholasticism Scholastic period in the thirteenth century, and particularly by Duns Scotus . Background Many realist philosophers of the period such as Aquinas and Henry of Ghent , recognised the need for an intermediate distinction that was not merely conceptual, but not fully real or mind dependent either. Aquinas held that the difference between our concepts arise not just in the mind, but have a foundation in the thing fundamentum in re . Henry held that there was an intentional distinction distinctio intentionalis such that intentions i.e. concepts that are distinct in the mind, correspond to things which are potentially distinct in reality. Scotus argued for a formal distinction distinctio formalis a parte rei , which holds between entities which are inseparable and indistinct in reality, but whose definitions are not identical. For example, the personal properties of the Trinity are formally distinct from the Divine essence. Similarly, the distinction between the thisness or haecceity of a thing is intermediate between a real and a conceptual distinction ref Honderich p. 209 ref . There is also a formal distinction between the divine attributes and the powers of the soul. William of Ockham Ockham was opposed to the idea, arguing that whenever there is any distinction or non identity in reality, then two contradictory statements can be made. But contradictory statements cannot be truly asserted unless the realities they stand for either 1 distinct real things 2 distinct concepts or 3 a thing and a concept. But if they all exist in reality, they are not distinct concepts, nor are they a real thing and a concept. Therefore they are distinct in reality ref .... La Distinction , a sociology sociological book by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu 1930 2002 , takes as its basis Bourdieu s empirical research carried out in 1963 and concluded in 1967 68. The original publication took place in 1979 in France. Richard Nice translated the work into English, and it appeared in the United States in 1984 under the title Distinction A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste . In 1998 the International Sociological Association voted it one of the ten most important sociological books of the 20th century. In his often densely worded prose, Bourdieu discussed how those in power sociology power define aesthetics aesthetic concepts such as taste aesthetics taste . Using research, he shows how social class tends to determine a person s likes and interests, and how distinction s based on social class get reinforced in daily life. He observes that even when the subordinate classes may seem to have their own particular idea of good taste , ... i t must never be forgotten that the working class aesthetic is a dominated aesthetic which is constantly obliged to define itself in terms of the dominant aesthetics... page 41 Bourdieu claims that how one chooses to present one s social space to the world, one s aesthetic disposition depicts one s status and distances oneself from lower groups. Specifically he says that these dispositions are internalized at an early age and guide the young towards their appropriate social positions, towards the behaviors that are suitable for them, and a dislike towards other behaviors. cleanup date October 2007 The distinction bias is a concept of decision theory . The concept was advanced by Hsee and Zhang as an explanation for differences in evaluations of options between joint evaluation mode and separate evaluation mode 2004 . Evaluation mode is a contextual feature in decision making . Joint evaluation mode is when options are evaluated simultaneously , and separate evaluation mode is when each option is evaluated in isolation e.g., Hsee, 1998 Hsee & Leclerc, 1998 . Research shows that evaluation mode affects the evaluation of options, such that options presented simultaneously are evaluated differently than the same options presented separately. Hsee and Zhang 2004 offered a number of potential explanations for this change in preferences from joint evaluation to separate evaluation, including the distinction bias. The distinction bias suggests that comparing two options as done in joint evaluation makes even small differences between options salient. In other words, viewing options simultaneously makes them seem more dissimilar than when viewing and evaluating each in isolation. Understanding the differences between joint evaluation and separate evaluation is important because while preferences are often formed and decisions made through distinction, options are generally experienced separately. This results in a mismatch in which the best decision in the choice context may not provide the best experience. For example, when televisions are displayed next to each other on the sales floor, the difference in quality between two very similar, high quality televisions may appear great. A consumer may pay a much higher price for the higher quality television, even though the difference in quality is imperceptible when the televisions are viewed in isolation. Because the consumer will likely be watching only one television at a time, the lower cost television ... 2004 title Distinction bias Misprediction and mischoice due to joint evaluation url journal Journal ... more details

The honorees exemplify lives devoted to study, work, and craft, as well as the education of others in the field. The first Awards were presented in 2001, at the annual Furniture Society conference held that year in Tempe, Arizona. Five craftsmen were honored simultaneously in the first presentation, in order to make up for time lost in planning and funding the awards and to insure that these five iconic figures in furniture making and education were properly recognized in their lifetimes. One of the initial honorees, Tage Frid, was unable to attend the ceremony due to health issues and died several months later. At the time of this writing October 2009 , three of the other initial honorees Art Carpenter, Sam Maloof and James Krenov have also passed on. Although the Award of Distinction has most often been presented to furniture makers and educators, anyone who has made significant contributions to the field of studio furniture can be considered.
