Taxobox virus group ii familia Geminiviridae subdivision ranks Genera subdivision Mastrevirus br Curtovirus br Begomovirus br Topocuvirus Geminiviruses are plant viruses which have single stranded circular DNA genomes encoding genes that diverge in both directions from a virion strand origin of replication i.e. geminivirus genomes are ambisense . According to the Baltimore classification they are considered class II viruses. The genome can either be a single component between 2500 3100 nucleotide s, or, in the case of some begomovirus es, two similar sized components each between 2600 and 2800 nucleotides. They have elongated, geminate capsid s with two incomplete T 1 icosahedra joined at the missing vertex. The capsids range in size from 18 20  nm in diameter with a length of about 30  nm. begomovirus Begomoviruses with two component i.e. bipartite genomes have these components separated into two different particles both of which must usually be transmitted together to initiate a new infection within a suitable host cell biology cell . - Cotton leaf curl virus
Taxobox color violet name Cotton leaf curl virus CLCuV virus group II The ssDNA Viruses familia Geminiviridae genus Begomovirus species Cotton leaf curl virus synonyms Introduction In Asia and Africa the major disease of cotton is caused by the Cotton leaf curl geminivirus CLCuV . Leaves of infected cotton curl upward and bear leaf like enations on the underside along with vein thickening. Plants infected early in the season are stunted and yield is reduced drastically. A. Nadeem and Z. Xiong, University of Arizona This virus devastated the Pakistan cotton industry in early 1990 s where it caused an estimated yield reduction of 30 35 . Description All begomovirus species causing cotton leaf curl disease have geminate particles, approximately 18 20  nm in diameter and 30  nm long and a circular, single stranded DNA genome. All except Cotton leaf crumple virus have a monopartite genome, with all viral products required for replication, systemic movement and whitefly transmission encoded on a single DNA component of c. 2.75 kB DNA A . The genome of CLCrV is bipartite. Two smaller, circular, single stranded DNA molecules, named DNA 1 and DNA , are associated with a range of monopartite begomoviruses from the Old World including the cotton leaf curl viruses. These molecules are regarded as satellite molecules as they depend on the helper begomovirus to support one or more stages of their infection cycle movement and insect transmission for both molecules and, additionally, replication in the case of DNA . DNA is symptom modulating and typical cotton leaf curl disease symptoms only develop when this molecule is present in the absence of DNA , the concentration of viral DNA DNA A is low and the symptoms of infection very mild. - Maize streak virus
Maize streak virus MSV is an insect transmitted maize pathogen of the family Geminiviridae that is endemic epidemiology endemic in sub Saharan Africa. MSV causes sporadic maize streak disease epidemics throughout the maize growing regions of Africa. The development of conventionally resistant maize varieties has been a priority since the 1950s in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and elsewhere, with a good deal of success however, there are several genes associated with resistance, and breeding is complex. Transgenically resistant or genetically modified crop genetically modified maize varieties are currently under development in South http www.blackwell synergy.com doi full 10.1111 j.1467 7652.2007.00279.x Africa ref citation doi 10.1111 j.1467 7652.2007.00279.x title Maize streak virus resistant transgenic maize a first for Africa year 2007 author Dionne N. Taxobox virus group ii familia Geminiviridae genus Begomovirus The genus Begomovirus contains more than 200 species ref cite journal author Fauquet, C. M., Briddon, R. W., Brown, J. K., Moriones, E., Stanley, J., Zerbini, M., and Zhou, X. year 2008 title Geminivirus strain demarcation and nomenclature journal Archives of Virology volume 153 pages 783 821 doi 10.1007 s00705 008 0037 6 pmid 18256781 issue 4 ref and belongs to the taxonomic family Geminiviridae . They are plant viruses that as a group have a very wide host range, infecting dicotyledonous plants. Worldwide they are responsible for a large amount of economic damage to many important crops such as tomatoes, beans, squash, cassava and cotton. Morphology Virus particles are non enveloped. The nucleocaspid is 38  nm long and 15 22  nm in diameter. While particles have basic isocaherdal symmetry, they consist of two incomplete icosahedra missing one vertex joined together. There are 22 capsomeres per nucleocapsid. Genome Single stranded closed circular DNA . Most begomoviruses have a bipartite genome , this means that the genome is segmented into two segments referred to as DNA A and DNA B that are packaged into separate particles. Both segments are generally required for successful symptomatic infection in a host cell, but DNA B is dependent for its replication upon DNA A, which can in some begomoviruses apparently cause normnal infections on its own. Transmission The virus is obligately transmitted by an insect vector, which can be the whitefly Bemisia tabaci or can be other whiteflies. ref Cite journal doi 10.2307 2657060 title Effects of Virus Infection and Light Environment on Population Dynamics of Eupatorium makinoi Asteraceae year 2001 author Funayama, Sachiko journal American Journal of Botany volume 88 pages 616 622 pmid 11302846 last2 Terashima first2 I last3 Yahara first3 T issue 4 url http jstor.org stable 2657060 ref This vector allows rapid and efficient propagation of the virus because ... more details

It is an important vector of several viruses and phytoplasmas worldwide. In Australia, phytoplasmas vectored by O. orientalis cause a range of economically important diseases including legume little leaf, tomato big bud, lucerne witches broom, potato purple top wilt, Australian lucerne and is a possible vector of Australian grapevine yellows. O. orientalis also transmits Tobacco yellow dwarf virus TYDV genus Mastrevirus , family Geminiviridae to beans, causing bean summer death disease and to tobacco, causing tobacco yellow dwarf disease. Although some direct damage caused by leafhopper feeding has been observed, it is relatively minor compared to the losses resulting from disease. - DNA virus
A DNA virus is a virus that has DNA as its genetic material and replicates using a DNA dependent DNA polymerase . The nucleic acid is usually double stranded DNA dsDNA but may also be single stranded DNA ssDNA . DNA viruses belong to either Group I or Group II of the Baltimore classification system for viruses. Single stranded DNA is usually expanded to double stranded in infected cells. Although Group VII viruses such as hepatitis B contain a DNA genome, they are not considered DNA viruses according to the Baltimore classification, but rather reverse transcribing viruses because they replicate through an RNA intermediate.
