Image Wand Blender.jpg thumb 100px Immersion blender An immersion blender , or stick blender is a kitchen appliance to blend ingredients or puree food in the container in which they are being prepared. They are sometimes called stick blenders , wand blenders , hand blenders , Bermixers after the brand name of professional models made by Dito Electrolux , or Boat Motor a nickname used by chefs Emeril Lagasse and Alton Brown . They may be used for pureeing soups and emulsifying sauces. Some can be used while a pan is on the stove. Immersion blenders are distinguished from blenders and food processor s that require food be placed in a special vessel for processing. They are distinguished from Mixer cooking hand mixer s which do not chop the food as it is blended. The immersion blender was invented in Switzerland by Roger Perrinjaquet, who patented the idea on March 6, 1950. Fact date November 2008 He called the new appliance bamix , a portmanteau of the French bat et mixe beats and mixes . The immersion blender has been in use in European professional kitchens since the 1960s, and was adopted for home use in the United States market in the 1980s. Models for home use usually have a shaft of ten to twelve inches, but models are available for professionals with a shaft up to two feet. Home models are available in corded or cordless versions. orphan date August 2010 unreferenced date March 2010 A gravimetic blender is an item of industrial equipment used in the plastics industry to accurately weigh two or more components and then mix them together prior to processing in an injection molding machine, plastics extrusion , or blow moulding machine. There are two types of gravimetric blender. Loss in weight This type of gravimetric blender measures the loss in weight from two or more hoppers using a load cell under each hopper. Material is usually dispensed from the hoppers using an auger screw. All materials are dispensed together and the rate of dosing from each hopper is controlled to ensure the correct blend is achieved. Gain in weight sometimes called a batch blender A gain in weight gravimetric blender has two or more hoppers arranged above a weigh pan. These hoppers contain the components which are to be mixed together, at the base of each hopper there is a valve to control the dispensing of material from the component hopper into the weigh pan. The components are dispensed one at a time into the weigh pan until the target or batch weight is reached. Once the batch has been weighed out the contents of the weigh pan are dispensed into a mixing chamber where they are blended. The resulting mixture exits the base of the mixing chamber into the processing machine. A typical application of a gravimetric blender would be mixing virgin plastic granules, recycled plastic, and wikt masterbatch masterbatch an additive used to colour plastics together.
