    The Galton Laboratory , was a laboratory for research into human genetics based at University College London in London , United Kingdom . It was originally established in 1904, and became part of UCL s biology department in 1996. The Galton Laboratory was founded in UCL as early as 1904, as a centre for research in human genetics. The Annals of Human Genetics was founded here in 1925 by Karl Pearson, the first Galton Professor, and the journal has always been edited at the Galton. Pearson was succeeded by R. A. Fisher in 1934. The post war Galton Professors were Lionel Penrose up to 1965, Harry Harris to 1976 and Bette Robson until 1994. J.B.S. Haldane held the Chair of Biometry here and was succeeded by Cedric Smith statistician C.A.B. Smith . The Galton Laboratory became part of the Department of Biology in UCL in 1996. MRC Human Biochemical Genetics Unit was established by Harris in 1962. He was Hon. Director until he went to Philadelphia in 1976, and the Unit continued under the direction of David Hopkinson until its closure in October 2000.     Unreferenced date November 2007 Galton Village is a residential area of Smethwick , Birmingham , West Midlands county West Midlands , England . It takes its name from the iconic nearby Galton Bridge that was named after local business man Samuel Galton who land the new BCN Main Line lower level canal was built through, the canal runs behind Galton Village as dose the Stour Valley section of West Coast Mainline. The Oldbury Road runs through the area which begins next to Smethwick s Smethwick Galton Bridge railway station Galton Bridge railway station and ends at Spon Lane, next to a small shopping centre. The estate was built originally during the 1960s, The new estate consisted of medium rise maisonettes and flats which were made from concrete, and earned it the nickname Concrete Jungle . The Galton Village estate was not a success, and by 1980 it was one of the grimiest and least desirable parts of the West Midlands. In the late 1980s, Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell Sandwell MBC decided that the whole estate would be demolished. By 1995, the regeneration of Galton Village was complete. The swathe of tall flats had been cleared to make way for modern and attractive low rise housing.     Galton Junction is a minor junction on the West Coast Main Line West Coast Main Line s Rugby Birmingham Stafford Line . With Smethwick Junction , it allows northbound trains from the RBS to join the Birmingham to Worcester via Kidderminster Line in a westbound direction and vice versa. Until the re opening of Birmingham Snow Hill for stations to Kidderminster , all passenger services routed via Galton and Smethwick Junctions to reach Birmingham New Street . With this re opening, use of the junction has sharply decreased. This was compounded with the removal of the service to New Street, and now only selected freight services and charter trains use the junction.     Galtons Canal map Galton s Canal was a 1 mile 3 furlong 2.2  km canal with one canal lock lock , crossing Westhay Moor in Somerset , England , and connecting the River Brue to the North Drain. It was built sometime between 1811 and 1822, and was authorised by the Brue Drainage Act of 1801. Near to the River Brue, the canal was embanked, after which the lock lowered the level to that of the surrounding countryside. Details of its operation are sparse, but Galton was ordered to repair the floodbanks near to the canal by the Commissioners of Sewers in 1830.
