History The Galleries of Justice are housed in a building called Shire Hall, which stands in the Lace Market area of Nottingham. The earliest confirmed use of the site for official purposes was by the Normans, who appointed sheriffs to keep the peace and collect taxes hence the site was also referred to as the Sheriff s Hall, the County Hall or the Kings Hall. The first written record of the site being used as a law court dates from 1375. The first written reference to its use as a prison is in 1449. Eighteenth century Many different buildings have occupied the site over the centuries. 17th century documentation relates to the building and a need for it to be re built. However, no action was taken until 1724, when a courtroom floor collapsed. Built in 1856, the Galleries are named after their founder, Archibald McLellan 1795 1854 , a coach builder, councillor and patron of the arts . Following his death, Glasgow Corporation acquired the galleries, and for a time they were known as the Corporation Halls before reverting to their former owner s name. The Galleries were situated behind a frontage of shops in Sauchiehall Street and housed Glasgow School of Art from 1869 to 1899. In the 1980s the Galleries were ravaged by fire, but re opened in 1990 as the largest high quality, air conditioned, temporary exhibition space in Scotland. The Thannhauser Galleries originated in Munich, in autumn 1909, when Heinrich Thannhauser 1859 1934 decided to quit his former partner Franz Josef Brakl and installed his Modern Gallery Moderne Galerie at the Arco Palais, Theatinerstrasse 7. After the end of World War I Heinrich Thannhauser s son Justin Thannhauser Justin established a branch in Lucerne Luzern, Switzerland, which was entrusted to his cousin Siegfried Rosengart , when Justin in 1921 was called back to Munich to assist his suffering father. In 1927, Justin successfully expanded business to Berlin and established a third branch of the Galleries. Heinrich Thannhauser died in 1934 on his way to Switzerland. Since then Rosengart worked on his own, while Justin decided in 1936 to move his business to Paris, and in 1940 finally, via Spain and Portugal emigrated to New York. Martineau Galleries is an important proposed mixed use development for Birmingham , England as it will connect the Eastside, Birmingham Eastside to the city centre core and is also located on the High Street, a major retail area. History Pre 1960s development It is known that the Augustian Priory of St Thomas of Canterbury, Birmingham Priory of St Thomas of Canterbury was located on the site in the 13th century. The entrance to the hospital was on what is now Bull Street, then Chapel Street, and ran along Steelhouse Lane, then Priory Congree. In 1536, the Priory was dissolved and the structures on site were demolished in 1547. The site remained as ruins for 150 years until it was purchased by John Pemberton in 1700. John Pemberton developed the site around Old Square and created a residential district on the site. In the 18th century, the Barley Market moved from the Bullring, Birmingham Bullring area to the junction of Bull Street and Dale End. In 1763, Sampson Lloyd and John Taylor established a private banking business known as Taylors & Lloyds on the site which would develop into Lloyds Bank . The construction of Corporation Street, Birmingham Corporation Street linked New Street, Birmingham New Street to Old Square and the area fast became a major area of the city centre. It became a tram terminus and new entertainment businesses were established in the area such as the Grand Theatre. The site became a conglomerate of buildings accessed via back alleys. There were two hotels and five public house s by 1890 as well as a chemical works on the Lower Priory. Dalton Street cut through the site however this street was removed during the 1960s development. On the eastern side of Dale End were houses and a school.
