  1. Plant geneticist

A plant geneticist is a scientist involved with the study of genetics in botany . Typical work is done with gene s in order to isolate and then develop certain plant Trait biology trait s. Once a certain trait, such as plant height, fruit sweetness, or tolerance to cold, is found, a plant geneticist works to improve breeding methods to ensure that future plant generations possess the desired traits. Plant genetics played a key role in the modern day theories of heredity , beginning with Gregor Mendel s study of pea plants in the 19th century. The occupation has since grown to encompass advancements in biotechnology that have led to greater understanding of plant breeding and Hybrid biology hybridization . Commercially, plant geneticists are sometimes employed to develop methods of making produce more nutritious, or altering plant pigments to make the food more enticing to consumers. Wikify date February 2011 An Collins is the otherwise unknown writer credited with the authorship of Divine Songs and Meditacions , a collection of poems and prose meditations published in 1653. All that is known of her life must be discovered in this volume. There is a strong strain of spiritual biography in her work, and from To the Reader, the Preface and The Discourse, it can be assumed that she lived in the country, probably with a disability or chronic illness. 1. David Reich (geneticist)

David Reich is a geneticist and professor in the department of genetics at the Harvard Medical School , and an associate of the Broad Institute , whose research studies comparing human DNA with that of chimpanzee s has generated controversy. Dr. Reich s genetics research focuses primarily on finding complex genetic patterns that cause susceptibility to common disease s among large populations, rather than finding specific genetic flaws associated with relatively rare illnesses. Reich s research team at Harvard University has produced controversial evidence that, over a span of at least four million years, various parts of the human genome diverged gradually from those of chimpanzees. Human origins The split between the human and chimpanzee lineages may have occurred millions of years later than fossil ized bones suggest, and the break may not have been as clean as commonly thought by modern scientists. The new DNA evidence developed by Reich s team suggests that after the two species initially separated, they may have continued interbreeding for several million years. A final genetic split transpired between 6.3 million and 5.4 million years ago, according to a report on their research published in the prestigious science journal Nature journal Nature . Harvard anthropologist David Pilbeam calls the new study terrifically exciting and important work, and commends Reich s method for estimating the time span of human chimpanzee genetic divergence. Controversial implications The hybridization hypothesis pushes the limits of credulity, according to anthropologist Jeffrey H. Schwartz , who has compiled a great deal of evidence linking human anatomical morphology to that of orangutan s. Reich s team looked for data to support an assumption of close genetic ties between humans and chimps, but skimmed over evidence of human similarities to other primates, Schwartz says. Although Schwartz sees no merit in the fact that the new findings appear to solidify the evidence of mankind ...   more details

  1. Robert Armstrong (geneticist)

Dr. Robert Armstrong , Longwood Gardens newly appointed Geneticist , began a Canna plant canna breeding program in 1967, when it was realized that cultivars available at that time were not suitable for use on display in the Gardens conservatories and lakes. Goals The goals were to develop a clear yellow flowered dwarf canna and a pure white flowered canna that could grow well in the Conservatory. to breed aquatic cannas, capable of thriving as marginal water plants, or in the border Originating stock New blood was required to create something new, and the project started with making crosses involving three cultivars, C. Ambassadour , Moonlight , and Banner , which were obtained from Yalta, Ukraine and South Africa. As the project progressed, other cultivars and species were introduced from around the world. Seeds of five species were received from Lago Maggiore, Italy, Canna glauca was procured from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in 1972, Dr. John Creech of the US National Arboretum, added three Russian cultivars, C. K.A. Timirazov , Krimsky Riviera , and Soleznaya Krasavaya . Conservatory Group With the new additions to the breeding stock, red, orange and pink cannas were developed for the Conservatory along with the original white and yellow. The selection criteria used were plant vigor, early flowering, foliar appearance, self cleaning ability and good propagation qualities. Between 1972 and 1985, twelve cultivars were selected for release. Named for local historically significant places and events, they were Canna Brandywine Canna Chesapeake Canna Conestoga Canna Constitution Canna Declaration Canna Delaware Canna Franklin Canna Freedom Canna Independence Canna Liberty Canna Lenape Canna Penn . In 1965 he began work with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California Pasadena , serving for five years as chief of JPL s bioscience section and as a member of the science teams for the Mariner and Viking program Viking missions to Mars. From 1977 to 1980, he was chairman of the biology division at Caltech. Among advocates of space exploration, he was noted for his opposition to a space program centered on the use of human astronauts. Charlene Anderson recalls, In personal discussions, he could be particularly vociferous on the topic of human versus robotic exploration. Norm argued that human exploration could only interfere with scientific exploration and confuse the public as to why we should explore space. In his view, science should drive the endeavor, not a lust for adventure. Scientific career Horowitz earned his Bachelor of Science BS in biology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1936 where his experience conducting research as an undergraduate help to persuade him to pursue further graduate training in science. He later established the endowed Norman H. Horowitz Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh to support undergraduate research. ref http www.pitt.edu biohome Dept Frame horowitzfellowship.htm The Norman H.
