The focalmechanism of an earthquake describes the inelastic deformation in the source region that generates the seismic waves. In the case of a Fault geology fault related event it refers to the orientation of the fault plane that slipped and the slip Euclidean vector vector and is also known as a fault plane solution . Focal mechanisms are derived from a solution of the moment tensor for the earthquake, which itself is estimated by an analysis of observed seismic waveforms . The focalmechanism can be derived from observing the pattern of first motions , that is, whether the first arriving P waves break up or down. This method was used before waveforms were recorded and analysed digitally and this method is still used for earthquakes too small for easy moment tensor solution. Focal mechanisms are now mainly derived using semi automatic analysis of the recorded waveforms. ref Sipkin, S.A., 1994, Rapid determination of global moment tensor solutions Geophysical Research Letters, v. 21, p. 1667 1670. ref Moment tensor solutions Image Focalmechanism 01.jpg thumb 380px Image Focalmechanism 02.jpg thumb 380px Image Focalmechanism 03.jpg thumb 380px The moment tensor solution is typically displayed graphically using a so called beachball diagram. Unreferenced date March 2007 For a surface in three dimension the focal surface , surface of centers or evolute is formed by taking the centers of the curvature sphere s, which are the tangent ial sphere s whose radii are the Multiplicative inverse reciprocals of one of the principal curvature s at the point of tangency. Equivalently it is the surface formed by the centers of the circles which osculate the curvature line s. As the principal curvatures are the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form, there are two at each point, and these give rise to two points of the focal surface on each surface normal normal direction to the surface. Away from umbilical point s, these two points of the focal surface are distinct at umbilical points the two sheets come together. At points where the Gaussian curvature is zero, one sheet of the focal surface will have a point at infinity corresponding to the zero principal curvature. Special cases The sphere is the only surface where both sheets of the focal surface degenerate to a single point. Both sheets of the focal surface of Dupin cyclide s form degenerate circles. For the torus one of these are is the straight line along the axis of symmetry. One sheet of the focal surface of a channel surface will form a degenerate curve. For the Focal language on PDP microcomputers FOCAL disambiguation The Forty one calculator language Focal is the language used to computer programming program the HP 41 range of expandable science engineering calculators from Hewlett Packard . As with most other calculator programming languages of the 1980s, a Focal program is a linear list of instructions. Each instruction or step roughly correspond to a key or key combination press, and thus correspond to what the user would do if he was to perform the computation himself on the calculator. This paradigm made Focal programming relatively easy for the newcomer, but program maintenance could be a nightmare. Add to that the use of GOTO instructions&mdash including going to a program step based on a value in a data register GTO IND , a technique known as computed goto &mdash and you had all the ingredients for the dreaded spaghetti code syndrome. Program steps are numbered starting from 1, but this numbering has no intrinsic meaning, and can change as new instructions are added or removed in the middle of a program. A special instruction LBL is used to create a label, that can be used by the user to invoke the program, or by the program itself, as target of a GTO unconditional go to or XEQ execute instruction. Here s a very simple Focal program 001 LBL DOUBLE 002 2 003 004 END The LBL DOUBLE instruction is a label, indicating that the user can invoke the program by XEQ DOUBLE . As this function can also be assigned to any key on the calculator s keyboard, this effectively adds a new function to the calculator. The next two steps correspond to what the function does, mainly multiply the X register by 2 the HP 41 uses Reverse Polish notation RPN notation. The END instruction indicates the end of the program. Note that contrary to many other programmable calculators, each Focal step could be stored in memory as more than one ... In any narrative , the focal character is the Character arts character on whom the audience is meant to place the majority of their interest and attention. He or she is almost always also the protagonist of the story however, in cases where the focal character and protagonist are separate, the focal character s emotions and ambitions are not meant to be empathized with by the audience to as high an extent as the protagonist this is the main difference between the two character terms . The focal character is mostly created to simply be the excitement of the story, though not necessarily the main character about whom the audience is emotionally concerned. orphan date November 2009 A focal cloud is the collection of Focus optics focal point s of any imperfect lens, whether lens optics optical , Electrostatic lens electrostatic or electromagnetic. This includes Parabolic antenna s and lens type reflective antennas of all kinds. The effect is analogous to the circle of confusion in photography. Image Focal cloud.jpg In this focal cloud illustration, a perfect reflector would focus all beams into the blue spot. Due to imperfections of lens construction, the actual signal beams follow the red path to several different focal points, which form the focal cloud. Lens reflector artifacts, geometry and other imperfections determine the actual radius of the focal cloud . Satellite dish effects A focal cloud can render a satellite dish rather inefficient in relation to its size in specific frequencies. If the imperfections are formed in a way that the phase shift s of reflected waves, at a large portion of the dish, are near 180 degrees between them and the feed horn , this results in self cancellation of the specific frequency. For countering the effect, there are several techniques, either in construction of the reflectors or lenses, or in the way signal beams are concentrated. In Satellite antennas, scalar rings are used to push the spread signal into the Feed horn Feed . During the last decade there has been a growing interest in social mechanisms and mechanism based explanations, not only in sociology and the social sciences but also in philosophy of science , particularly philosophy of biology . Although many sociologists use the word mechanism they often use it in an off hand casual sense without any commitment to any type of mechanism based explanatory strategy. The core idea behind the mechanism approach has been expressed as follows by Jon Elster Elster 1989 3 4 To explain an event is to give an account of why it happened. Usually this takes the form of citing an earlier event as the cause of the event we want to explain . But to cite the cause is not enough the causal mechanism must also be provided, or at least suggested. There is no consensus on what is to be meant by a mechanism. Existing definitions differ a great deal from one another, but underlying them all is an emphasis on making intelligible the regularities being observed by specifying in detail how they were brought about. The currently most satisfactory discussion of the mechanism concept is found in Machamer, Darden and Craver 2000 . Following them, mechanisms can be said to consist of entities with their properties and the activities that these entities engage in, either by themselves or in concert with other entities. These activities bring about change, and the type of change brought about depends upon the properties and activities of the entities and the relations between them. A mechanism, thus defined, refers to a constellation of entities and activities that are organized such that they regularly bring about a particular type of outcome, and we explain an observed outcome by referring to the mechanism by which such outcomes are regularly brought about see also Peter Hedstrom Hedstr m and Ylikoski 2010 . Lower pair A pair is said to be a lower pairs when the connections between two elements are through the area of contact.
