Foreign Exchange Unreferenced date May 2009 The currency band is a system of exchange rate s by which a floatingcurrency is backed by hard money . A country selects a range, or band , of values at which to set their currency, and returns to a fixed exchange rate if the value of their currency shifts outside this band. This allows for some revaluation, but tends to stabilize the currency s value within the band. In this sense, it is a compromise between a fixed or pegged exchange rate and a floating exchange rate. For example, the exchange rate of the renminbi of the mainland China mainland of the People s Republic of China has recently been based upon a currency band the European Economic Community s snake in the tunnel was a similar concept that failed, but ultimately led to the establishment of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism ERM and ultimately the Euro . A floating floor is a floor that does not need to be nailed or glued to the subfloor. The term floating floor refers to the installation method, but is often used synonymously with laminate flooring in a domestic context. A sprung floor is a special type of floating floor designed to enhance sports or dance performance. In general though the term refers to a floor used to reduce noise or vibration . A domestic floating floor might be constructed over a subfloor or even over an existing floor. It can consist of a glass fibre , felt or Cork material cork layer for sound insulation with neoprene pads holding up a laminate floor. There is a gap between the floating floor and the walls to decouple them and allow for expansion this gap is covered with skirting board s or Molding decorative mouldings . Floating floors as used in sound studios can be either just larger versions of the domestic variety, or much larger constructions with slabs of concrete to keep the resonance frequency down. The manufacture of integrated circuits uses massive floating floors with hundreds of tons in weight of concrete to avoid vibration affecting mask alignment. Floating floors are one of the requirements for the THX high fidelity sound reproduction standard for movie theaters, screening rooms, home theaters, computer speakers, gaming consoles, and car audio systems. Unreferenced date October 2006 Other uses of figure Figure disambiguation A floating block in writing and publishing is any graphic, text, table, or other representation that is unaligned from the main flow of text. Use of floating blocks to present pictures and table information table s is a typical feature of academic writing and technical writing , including scientific and articles and books. Floating blocks are normally labeled with a caption or title that describes its contents and a number that is used to refer to the figure from the main text. A common system divides floating block into two separately numbered series, labeled figure for pictures, diagrams, Plot graphics plots , etc. and table . Floating blocks are said to be floating because they are not fixed in position on the page at the place, but rather drift to the side of the page. An alternative name for figure is image or graphic . By placing pictures or other large items on the sides of pages rather than embedding them in the middle of the main flow of text, typesetting is more flexible and interruption to the flow of the narrative is avoided. For example, an article on geography might have Figure 1 Map of the world , Figure 2 Map of Europe , Table 1 Population of continents , Table 2 Population of European countries , and so on. Some books will have a table of figures in addition to the table of contents that lists centrally all the figures appearing in the work. Other kinds of floating blocks may be differentiated as well, for example Sidebar For digressions from the main narrative. For example, a technical manual on usage of a product might include examples of how various people have employed the product in their work in sidebars. Also called an intermezzo . A floating hinge is a hinge that, while able to behave as a normal hinge, enables one of the objects to move away from the other hence float. In effect the hinge allows for two parallel axes of rotation, one for each object joined by the hinge, and each axis can be moved relative to the position of the other. Floating hinges are used in flatbed scanner s designed to scan thick objects such as books. A sheet of paper is placed on the glass, and the cover is lowered over it the glass, the paper, and the sheet are very close together. If a thick book is placed on the glass an ordinary hinge would leave the cover at an angle to the glass. A floating hinge raises the hinged edge of the cover to the level of the book, so that the cover remains parallel to the glass, but raised above it. Floating hinges are also used in two plate electric grill cooking cooking grills , as they allow for even heating of both sides of a thick piece of food without crushing it.
