Burnside Flashers Summary The Burnside Flashers formed in 2005, when five co workers at a hospital in Metairie got together for what was to be a one time gig for the American Cancer Society. After about four practices for this event, the band found itself with about 30 rock and roll songs, from the classic Rock and Roll All Night by Kiss to Heaven by the Los Lonely Boys. The benefit gig was held next door to the Hospital at Stitches Bar & Grill, and the Burnside Flashers found themselves playing in from of a standing room only crowd. The gig was highly successful, as the crowd danced and sang the entire night to the rock and roll tunes from the past four decades. Playing for more than 3 hours, the band collected over 800 dollars for a really nice donation to the American Cancer Society. The band received such good reviews from the first gig, that they were asked to play again, and have continued to do so each month, playing at venues such as the famous New Southport Hall and the Bertolino Stadium in Kenner. The Burnside Flashers has also been featured three times on the radio, with the Under the Covers segment on The Bayou 95.7, which features local artist in the New Orleans area. The band s set list includes songs for dancing and current radio hits, but primarily focuses on rock and roll hits of the 70s, and early MTV 80s with songs such as Peter Frampton s Show Me the Way and Pat Benatar s Hit Me With Your Best Shot . Coord 33.80555 89.80159 display title The Billups Neon Crossing Signal was a prototypical grade crossing signal installed at a dangerous Illinois Central crossing on Mississippi Highway 7 now Mississippi Highway 332 in Grenada, Mississippi . It was installed in the mid 1930s by inventor Alonzo Billups over growing concern due to numerous train versus motor vehicle accidents at the crossing. Like nothing before, the Billups signal was a large gantry spanning the highway and was likely the first such use of a gantry style crossing of the type now in relatively common use. Upon approach of a train, a giant neon sign lit up with the words Stop DEATH Stop beneath a lighted skull and crossbones . Flashing neon arrows indicated the direction of oncoming trains and an air raid siren in lieu of bells provided aural warning. As a backup, standard railway flashers were mounted below the neon sign. The signal was known locally as the Skull and Crossbones. The onset of World War II brought about a scarcity of neon which, when coupled with maintenance problems with the signal often manifesting themselves in the siren going off and not shutting down until a crew arrived meant that no further signals were produced. The prototype was removed after less than thity years of service.
