  1. Pedinellales

Unreferenced date December 2009 Pedinellales or actinodines is a group of heterokont s. These are found in both freshwater and marine environments, and most genera are sessile, attached by posterior stalks. The flagellum is at the anterior of the cell, and the tentacles surround it, often capturing small prey drawn in by its current. The colored genera are Pedinella , Apedinella , Pseudopedinella , and Mesopedinella . Several more genera have lost their chloroplasts and feed entirely by phagocytosis . These are Parapedinella , Actinomonas , and Pteridomonas . It also appears that certain heliozoa are actually derived pedinellids. Ciliophrys alternates between a mobile flagellate stage and a heliozoan feeding stage, where the body is contracted with extended axopods all over its surface, and the flagellum is curled up into a tight figure eight. The actinophryid s, Actinophrys and Actinosphaerium , exist only in a heliozoan form with no flagellum and with more elaborate bundles of microtubules supporting their axopods. Their inclusion was argued by Mikrjukov and Patterson, who coined the term actinodine to refer specifically to this extended group. The colored pedinellids were originally treated as a family of golden alga e in the order Ochromonadales, promoted to an order Pedinellales by Zimmerman in 1984. Their relationship to the silicoflagellates became apparent some time later, and Patterson defined this rankless group for the two in 1994. Moestrup treated it as the class Dictyochophyceae, previously restricted to the silicoflagellates, while Cavalier Smith defined a new class Actinochrysophyceae for them. They are distinguished by having their two flagellum flagella inserted apically, rather than ventrally as in other groups. One flagellum extends forward and the other circles its base, and there are no flagellar grooves. This arrangement is called desmokont, in contrast to the dinokont arrangement found in other groups. Accordingly, the Prorocentrales may be called desmoflagellates, and in some classifications were treated as a separate class Desmophyceae. All members have chloroplast s and a theca, which is composed of two large plates joined by a sagittal suture. This structure is shared with the Dinophysiales , and they are probably sister groups. This does not show up on rRNA trees, which also show two separate groups of Prorocentrum , but they leave their relationships mostly unresolved. Image Chlamydomonas TEM 09.jpg thumb right Longitudinal section through the flagella area in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii . In the cell apex is the basal body that is the anchoring site for a flagellum. Basal bodies originate from and have a substructure similar to that of centrioles, with nine peripheral microtubule triplets see structure at bottom center of image . A basal body also called a basal granule or kinetosome is an organelle formed from a centriole , and a short cylindrical array of microtubules . It is found at the base of a eukaryotic undulipodium cilium or flagellum and serves as a nucleation site for the growth of the axoneme microtubules. Centrioles, from which basal bodies are derived, act as anchoring sites for proteins that in turn anchor microtubules within centrosomes, one type of microtubule organizing center MTOC . These microtubules provide structure and facilitate movement of vesicles and organelles within many eukaryotic cells. Basal bodies, however, are specifically the bases for cilia and flagella that extend out of the cell. Basal bodies are derived from centrioles through a largely mysterious process. They are structurally the same, each containing a microtubule triplet 9 3 helocoidal configuration forming a hollow cylinder. Regulation of basal body production and spatial orientation is a function of the nucleotide binding domain of tubulin. ref Y. Shang, C. C. Tsao, and M. A. Gorovsky. 2005. 1. Hyperactivation

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Hyperactivation is a type of Spermatozoon sperm motility . Hyperactivated sperm motility is characterised by a high amplitude, asymmetrical beating pattern of the sperm tail flagellum . This type of motility may aid in sperm penetration of the zona pellucida , which encloses the ovum . Hyperactivation could then be followed by the acrosome reaction where the cap like structure on the head of the cell releases the enzymes it contains. This facilitates the penetration of the ovum and fertilisation. Some definitions consider sperm activation to consist of these two processes of hyperactivation and the acrosome reaction Hyperactivation is a term also used to express an X chromosome gene dosage compensation mechanism and is seen in Drosophila. Here, a complex of proteins bind to the X linked genes to effectively double their genetic activity. This allows males XY to have equal genetic activity as females XX , whose X s are not hyperactivated. Mechanisms Mammalian sperm cells become more active when they approach an egg cell in a process called sperm activation . Sperm activation has been shown to be caused by calcium ionophores in vitro , progesterone released by nearby cumulus cells and binding to ZP3 of the zona pellucida. The initial change is called hyperactivation , which causes a change in spermatozoa motility. They swim faster and their tail movements become more forceful and erratic. A recent discovery links hyperactivation to a sudden influx of calcium ion into the tails. The whip like tail flagellum of the sperm is studded with ion channel s formed by proteins called CatSper . These channels are selective, allowing only calcium ion to pass. The opening of CatSper channels is responsible for the influx of calcium. The sudden rise in calcium levels causes the flagellum to form deeper bends, propelling the sperm more forcefully through the viscous environment. Sperm hyperactivity is necessary for breaking through two p ...   more details
