The Epistle to the Easterns is an apostolic letter sent by Pope Pius IX in 1848 to the bishop s and clergy of the Eastern Orthodox Church Orthodox Churches not in full Communion Christian Communion with the Pope , urging them to resume such Communion. The Epistle is the first of a series of apostolic letters and encyclical s published by Pius IX defining the terms and conditions for a reunification between the Roman Church and the Orthodox Churches, after the Great Schism of 1054 . The Greek writer and recipient are not otherwise known, but the language and other textual evidence dates the work to the late 2nd century some assume an even earlier date and count it among the Apostolic Fathers . Author and audience Mathetes is not a proper name it simply means a disciple. The writer is a Gospel of John Johannine Christian who does not use the name Jesus or the expression the Christ but prefers the use of the Word.
