unreferenced date February 2007 Electronic firing refers to the use of an electric current to fire a cartridge weaponry cartridge , instead of a percussion cap . In modern firearm designs, a firing pin and percussion cap are used to ignite the gunpowder propellant in the cartridge and propels the bullet forward. Because the firing pin must travel a short distance, this creates a short delay between the user pulling the trigger and the weapon firing, which generally decreases accuracy. In an electronic fired firearm however, an electric current is used instead to ignite the propellant, which fires the cartridge as soon as the trigger is pulled. Electrically primed small arms cartridges retain the primer which functions in the same way as a conventional primer. Rather than being struck by a firing pin, or equivalent mechanical means, a small electrical current serves to detonate the primer which provides the thermal impulse necessary to ignite the propellant which then deflagrates, producing pressure. Orphan date February 2009 Unreferenced date November 2007 Tangential firing is a method of firing a fuel to heat air in thermal power station s. The flame envelope rotates ensuring thorough mixing within the furnace, providing complete combustion and uniform heat distribution. The most effective method for producing intense turbulence is by the impingement of one flame on another. This action is secured through the use of burners located in each of the four corners of the furnace, close to the floor or the water screen. The burner nozzles are so directed that the streams of coal an air are projected along a line tangent to a small circle, lying in a horizontal plane, at the center of the furnace. Intensive mixing occurs where these streams meet. A scrubbing action is present which assures contact between the combustible and oxygen, thus promoting rapid combustion and reducing carbon loss. A rotative motion, similar to that of a cyclone, is imparted to the flame body, which spreads out and fills the furnace area. The ignition at each burner is aided by the flame from the preceding one. With tangential firing the furnace is essentially the burner, consequently air and coal quantities need not be accurately proportional to the individual fuel nozzle assemblies. Turbulence produced in the furnace cavity is sufficient to combine all the fuel and air. This continuously insures uniform and complete combustion so that test performance can be maintained throughout daily operation. With other types of firing the fuel and air must be accurately proportioned to individual burners making it difficult to always equal test results. With this type of firing, combustion is extremely rapid, and short flame length results. The mixing is so intense that combustion rates exceeding 35,000 Btu ft sup 3 sup h or 360  kW m sup 3 sup are practical under certain conditions. In traditional artillery tactics , either a cannon , a howitzer or occasionally a Mortar weapon mortar would fire a shot that would just clear the outer parapet of a fortification, and then would bounce or ricochet inside the fortification s bounds. One of the primary purposes of Ricochet Fire was to dismount artillery and guns positioned on an enemy s fortifications. Additionally, Ricochet fire could also be used to cause chaos behind an enemy army s fortifications, as the ricocheting cannonball would devastate logistical structures not fortified to withstand cannon fire. The first European use of Ricochet Fire has been accredited to the Marquis de Vauban during the Siege of Ath 1697 siege of Namur city Namur , although it is noted that Turkish artillery divisions were using ricochet fire as early as 1608. Summary This photo, taken in 2010, shows a switchbox containing the firing circuit switches for the mortars of Pit B, Battery Whitman, Ft. Andrews, Boston, MA. The photo looks toward the northwesterly wall of the pit. Also visible to the left of and somewhat lower than the switchbox is the mounting bracket or shoe that used to hold the firing magneto that generated the firing current for the mortars. These items are located just outside the armored door of the data booth just around the corner, but not visible here , which is built into the wall of the mortar pit. Only two of the four circuit switches appear to be connected to cables leading to the pit, which could indicate that only two of the four firing positions in the pit were actually occupied by mortars. This would be the case if the number of tubes had been reduced, in order to make the mortars easier to serve and or to send mortars away to equip batteries at other forts. The pit is slowly being overrun by intrusive vines and undergrowth, visible in the image. Licensing self cc by sa 3.0 ... more details
