For other uses of the term Headland headland Unreferenced date October 2008 In agriculture, a headland is the area at each end of a planted field. It is used for turning around with farm implements during field operations and is the first area to be harvested to minimize crop damage. The rows run perpendicular to the lay of the field and are usually two, three or four times the width of the implement used for planting the field. The soil on headlands is subject to greater levels of soil compaction because it receives more traffic per unit of area than the field as a whole. Yields are generally lower than in the field itself due to additional implement traffic and crop damage from implements turning on them as well as compaction. Soil fertility levels are frequently higher than in the main part of the field due to overlapping applications of fertilizer coupled with reduced yields. In some areas of the US, this area is known as the turnrow. DEFAULTSORT Headland Agriculture Category Agronomy Category Agricultural terminology Category Agricultural soil science ... more details

main Agriculture in the United Kingdom Agriculture in England is today intensive agriculture intensive , highly agriculture mechanised , and efficient by Europe an standards, producing about 60 of food needs with only 2 of the labour force. It contributes around 2 of Gross domestic product GDP . Around two thirds of production is devoted to livestock , one third to agronomy arable crops. Agriculture is heavily subsidised by the European Union s Common Agricultural Policy and it is not known how large a sector it would be if the market was unregulated. The GDP from the farming sector is argued by some to be a small return on the subsidies given Citation needed date June 2008 but is argued by others that subsidy boosts food security Citation needed date June 2008 and therefore is justified in the same way defence spending is. The main crops that are grown are wheat , barley , oat s, potato es, sugar beet s, fruits and vegetables. The livestock that is raised include cattle and sheep . In the drier east, farmers grow wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, and sugar beets. History Between the 16th century and the mid 19th century, Great Britain saw a massive increase in agricultural productivity and net output. See British Agricultural Revolution . New agricultural practices like enclosure, mechanisation, four field crop rotation and selective breeding enabled an unprecedented population growth, freeing up a significant percentage of the workforce, and thereby helped drive the Industrial Revolution . By the early 19th century, agricultural practices, particularly careful selection of hardy strains and cultivars, had so improved that yield per land unit was many times that seen in the Middle Ages and before. Multiple issues onesource April 2009 update April 2009 Like the rest of the economy , agriculture in Estonia has been in great flux since the degeneration of the Collective farm collective and state farm systems. In 1991 roughly 12 percent of the labor force was employed in agriculture , producing 15.4 percent of Estonia s Gross domestic product GDP . Estonia has some 1.3 million hectares of agricultural land, nearly 1 million hectares of which are Arable land arable . During the Soviet era , arable land decreased by nearly 405,000 hectares, much becoming forest . Collectivization in the late 1940s and 1950s brought great hardship to Estonian agriculture, which during the first independence period had been the mainstay of Estonian society. Still, Estonian agriculture remained more productive than the Soviet average. In 1990 there were 221 collective and 117 state farms with an average of 350 to 400 workers each. The average livestock herd per farm included 1,900 cattle and 2,500 pig s. Estonia was a net exporter of meat and milk to the other republics. Agriculture also served as the basis for the republic s strong food processing industry. For its meat production, however, Estonia relied heavily on feed grain from Russia. When the republic sought to cut back on meat exports in the late 1980s, Russia retaliated by slowing the provision of feed grain, which cut Estonian production even further. Increases in fuel prices and a general fuel crisis in early 1992 also hit agricultural production very hard.
