The pin feather looks somewhat like a feather shaft. However, unlike a fully developed feather, the pin feather has a blood supply flowing through it. As such, if the pin feather is damaged, a bird can bleed heavily. Pin feathers are therefore sensitive, and some pet birds do not enjoy being handled while moulting for this reason. ref http www.keepingchickensnewsletter.com site pin feathers blood feathers chicken first aid Bleeding Blood Feathers Chicken First Aid ref To stop bleeding from a pin feather, it is necessary to pluck the feather from its base. ref http www.avianweb.com bleeding.html Bleeding Birds Bot generated title ref This can be difficult for a pet bird owner to do on a larger bird, so it is recommended owners have the necessary tools on hand in a first aid kit. The bird should be brought to a vet for assistance. As the pin feather grows longer, the blood supply is concentrated in only the base of the shaft, and the tip of the shaft encases the feather itself, in a waxy coating. As moulting birds personal grooming preen , they remove the waxy coating, and the feather unfurls. When the blood has receded, the term blood feather is no longer synonymous with pin feather it can only be referred to as a pin feather. References reflist Category Feathers ...   more details

  1. Feather stick

Image Feather stick.jpg thumb right Feather stick ready for action A feather stick is a length of wood which has been shaved to produce a head of thin curls. It is used when starting an outdoor fire or campfire when dry tinder is hard to find, and is often used in conjunction with charcloth . It has been popularised recently in the media by exponents of Bushcraft such as Ray Mears author Ray Mears . It is believed to be a traditional method of fire starting, utilising basic tools and methods. Using Feather sticks Feather sticks are made from dead standing wood, such as a branch that has broken from a tree and died, but has not yet fallen to the ground. The bark and the outer layer of wood are removed to reveal the dry heartwood. This is then shaved, with axe or knife, to produce as many curls as possible. While the flakes can be fairly coarse, the finer they are shaved the more easily they light. When used in conjunction with charcloth, a small piece of charcloth is wound around the curls and a spark is struck on to it, using either the traditional flint and firesteel steel or a modern ferrocerium striker. This is then blown onto until the curls catch fire the whole feather stick is then placed into the waiting kindling to start the campfire.
