It cannot be used to receive a fax transmission in the usual sense, because a sending modem cannot transmit an image without first negotiating a connection with a receiving modem. Unreferenced date August 2008 Image PCI V.92 Fax Modem Card Digon3.jpg thumb right A V.92 fax modem card A fax modem enables a computer to transmit and receive documents as fax es. A fax modem is like a data modem but is designed to transmit and receive documents to and from a fax machine or another fax modem. Some, but not all, fax modems do double duty as data modems. As with other modem s, fax modems can be internal or external. Internal fax modems are often called fax boards. History In the early 90 s small business PCs commonly had a PC based fax modem card and fax software typically WinFax Pro . Now largely replaced by E mail, PC based faxing with a fax modem is more and more a rarity. Where faxing from a PC is required there are a number of Internet fax Internet based faxing alternatives. So, while it s still common to see businesses with a one or more traditional fax machines churning out pages, they are often surrounded by a forest of PCs processing even more E mail. PC faxing Computer users may set up a PC fax modem with card, telephone line access and software, or use a service similar to printing from a PC or sending an E mail message. Fax integration is available in unified communications e.g. E mail, Voice Mail and Fax managed together , in a number of Business telephone system Hosted PBX systems Hosted PBX products where standard features allow users to send a fax by using the fax phone number as the address of a E mail message, and receive incoming faxes via E mail with the Fax content presented as a PDF attachment. The use of fax modem cards after the 1990s became a last resort, as compared to a high speed Internet connection. Few users saw a reason for the effort of making this old technology approach work. 1. Optical DPSK demodulator

An Optical DPSK demodulator is a device that provides a method for converting an optical differential phase shift keying DPSK signal to an intensity keyed signal at the receiving end in fiber optic communication networks. The DPSK decoding method is achieved by comparing the Phase waves phase of two sequential bits. An incoming DPSK optical signal is first split into two beams with equal intensities, in which one beam is delayed in space by an optical path difference that introduces a time delay corresponding to one bit . The two beams in the two paths are then coherently recombined to Interference wave propagation interfere each other constructively or destructively. The interference intensity is measured and becomes the intensity keyed signal. A typical optical system for such a purpose is Mach Zehnder interferometer or Michelson interferometer , forming an optical DPSK Demodulator. Delay time depends on the data rate . 1. Black fax

Refimprove date February 2008 The term black fax refers to a prank fax transmission, consisting of one or more pages entirely filled with a uniform black tone. The sender s intention is typically to consume as much of the recipient s fax ink, toner or thermal paper or disk space as possible, thus costing the recipient money and or denying the recipient the use of their machine this is similar to computer based denial of service attacks . This is made easier because the Fax Digital fax transmission protocols compress the solid black image very well, so a very short fax call can produce many pages. Black faxes have been used to harass large institutions or government departments, to retaliate against the senders of junk fax es, or merely as simple pranks. The basic principle of a black fax can be extended to form a black fax attack. In this case, one or more sheets are fed halfway through the sender s fax machine and taped end to end, forming an endless loop that cycles through the machine. Not only can solid black be used, but also images which will repeat endlessly on the receiver s machine until his or her toner runs out. The introduction of Fax server computer based facsimile systems combined with integrated document imaging solutions at major corporations now means that black faxes are unlikely to cause problems for larger corporations. On the other hand, the ability for computer modems to send faxes offers new avenues for abuse. A program could be used to generate hundreds of pages of perfectly compressed, pure black and send them very quickly to the target fax machine. Black faxes are similar in both intention and implementation to lace card s. 1. 3D Fax

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2008 3D Fax was an early Microsoft Windows Windows program from InfoImaging Technologies . It allowed binary file s to be transmitted via fax . Basically, the software would encode the file into a printed image to be sent to the recipient s fax machine. The recipient would then Image scanner scan the transmitted image and use 3D Fax to decode it back to its original binary form. Its functionality was limited. Although being able to send a binary file via fax is a novel idea, it has three main problems The size of the binary file is limited to what is possible to encode on a letter sized piece of paper, so sending anything over 50 kb would require many sheets of paper to print, fax, and scan. The sending party requires an adequate printer and a fax machine or fax modem, and the receiving party requires a scanner and fax although a fax modem on both sides would eliminate the printer and scanner requirements . Both also need access to a phone line, to send their fax. Most binary files need 100 reliability on the transport. If the binary file is an executable , for example, it needs to be decoded perfectly by the receiving party, or the file simply won t work. This is usually impossible with normal fax transmissions, since they normally have noise and are not 100 copies of the originals. Adding a scan to the process only worsens matters. The advent of an almost ubiquitous Internet , along with email , made the limited usefulness of this software obsolete. DEFAULTSORT 3d Fax Category Fax software ...   more details
