unreferenced date December 2007 James Brice August 26, 1746 July 11, 1801 was an United States American planter, lawyer, and politician from Annapolis, Maryland . He was Governor of Maryland in 1792, and one of the largest land owners on the east coast. James was born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and was the son of John Brice, Jr. and Sarah Frisby Brice. He practiced law in Annapolis and married Juliana Jennings in 1781. The couple would have five children Julia, Anne, Elizabeth, James, Thomas, John. Brice began his political career as tax commissioner for the county and as an alderman in Annapolis. In 1777 he became a member of the Maryland Governor s Council, a post he held until 1799. As the senior member of the council, Brice became acting Governor when governor George Plater died on February 10, 1792. He stepped down after Thomas Sim Lee was elected and sworn in on April 2. Brice also served as Mayor of Annapolis in 1782 1783 and again in 1787 1788. He represented Maryland as a U.S. Electoral College Presidential Elector twice, both times voting for George Washington . He served as treasurer for the city of Annapolis from 1784 until his death. James died in Annapolis, and was survived by his wife Juliana and all five children who left and settled in Topping Virginia. The last known family members are Judge James brice and Jimmy Brice of Roanoke, Va. Life Antoine Brice was the son of the painter Pierre Fran ois Brice , working in the entourage of Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine , and his own son Ignace Brice Ignace also became a painter. Antoine began his training as a painter under his father at the Brussels Court and was made a master by the Corporation of Painters of Brussels on 5 February 1783. In the meantime he had also followed a more classical training at the Acad mie Royale des Beaux Arts Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of Brussels , where he won first prize in 1776. This training and the entourage of the governor general s court led him, at the end of the 18th century and the end of the Austrian regime in Brussels, to become a kind of official painter to the city s aristocratic circles. He became a professor at the Brussels academy and there headed a course on classical art and the principals of drawing. His students included Jean Baptiste Madou . Life He was born at Airth , Stirlingshire , about 1569, and is named Bryce in the Scottish records, but Brice in the Irish records. He entered Edinburgh University about 1589, and studied under Charles Ferme or Fairholm . He laureated 12 August 1593. On 30 December 1595 he was admitted by the Stirling presbytery to the parochial charge of Bothkenner . He was translated to Drymen on 14 May 1602, and admitted on 30 September by the Dumbarton presbytery. At the synod of Glasgow on 18 August 1607 he bitterly opposed the appointment of John Spottiswoode as permanent moderator, in accordance with the king s recommendation, adopted by the general assembly at Linlithgow on 10 December 1606.
