He was the son of Edward Priaulx Tennant, 1st Baron Glenconner Edward Tennant , who became Baron Glenconner Lord Glenconner in 1911, and Pamela Wyndham , a writer, Lady Glenconner and later wife of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon . His younger brother was the eccentric, Stephen Tennant . He was educated at Winchester College , which he left aged 17. He joined the Grenadier Guards . He was known to friends and family as Bim . It is unknown where this nickname derives from. It has been suggested that he was engaged at one point to Nancy Cunard . That this is untrue has been confirmed by two reliable sources Colin Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner, who responded to this question by letter, and Lois Gordon, Nancy Cunard s biographer, who, in her extensive research, never came across any hint of such an alliance. The Edward Grey Institute of Field Ornithology EGI , at Oxford University , England is an academic body which conducts research in ornithology and the general field of evolutionary ecology and conservation biology , with an emphasis on understanding organisms in natural environments. It is named in honour of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon , a notable politician and ornithologist. The Institute houses the Alexander Library, the best ornithological library in Europe and one of the best in the world, which is named after Wilfred Backhouse Alexander W. B. Alexander . History The Edward Grey Institute EGI was founded in 1938, having grown out of the Oxford Bird Census, itself founded in 1927. It was the brainchild of Max Nicholson , Bernard Tucker , and Wilfred Backhouse Alexander Wilfred W. B. Alexander , and was initially founded to promote the economic study of ornithology. The Hon. Percy Scawen Wyndham 30 January 1835 13 March 1911 , was a British soldier, Conservative Party UK Conservative politician, collector and intellectual. He was one of the original members of The Souls and the father of George Wyndham and grandfather of Stephen Tennant . Wyndham was a younger son of George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield , and his wife Mary Fanny, daughter of Reverend William Blunt, and was educated at Eton College Eton . He served in the Coldstream Guards and achieved the rank of Captain.
