Unreferenced date December 2009 Image picture maze unsolved.png thumb 350px right A picture maze looks like a traditional maze, but contains a hidden image. A Image picture maze solved.png solution is available for this maze. A picture maze is a maze puzzle that forms a picture when solved. Rules Picture mazes require no special rules or learning and rules are very simple Draw a path from the entrance to exit of the puzzle, avoiding the dead ends Fill the squares along the path to reveal the hidden picture It is interesting to note that because of two rules, it is far simpler to reverse the process to solve this puzzle. Starting at a dead end, the path is filled until it reaches an intersection with three or more paths connecting to it. This process is repeated until all dead end paths are filled, often showing the shortest path. On larger pieces, this is the only way to solve as there are too many possible, but incorrect paths and chance of finding the correct path based on intuition, logic or simple luck is almost nonexistent. History Picture Mazes were first pioneered by Francesco Segala, a 15th century architect from Padua, Italy. He created puzzle maze designs, mainly in figurative forms. His designs included ships, dolphins, crabs, dogs, snails, horsemen and human figures. It is doubtful whether any of his designs were actually constructed in hedges. Image Snailmaze 03.gif right thumb 200px Snail Maze Snail Maze is a 1986 video game by Sega , part of the Sega Master System . Instead of being released on a cartridge, it was built into the system s BIOS and could be played by starting the system without a game cartridge inserted and holding Up and buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously. The later Master System II model did not include Snail Maze . Snail Maze was never released in cartridge or card format. Gameplay A very simple game, Snail Maze involves navigating a small orange snail with a yellow shell through a blue maze. A goal area is clearly marked, which players must attempt to reach within a time limit. Despite its relative simplicity compared to other games of its era, Snail Maze could be quite challenging. Subsequent levels reduce the time available, giving a progressively lower margin for error. Recent releases Snail Maze fans have worked to keep the game from becoming an obscure footnote in video game history. For example, in 2004 a port of Snail Maze was made for the Japanese MSX computer platform. The port included enhanced graphics as well as a new title screen. A version of Snail Maze was included on the Coleco Sonic handheld system, created in 2006, as well.
