  1. Combat endurance

Multiple issues cleanup March 2010 expert Military history unreferenced March 2010 date April 2010 Combat endurance is the time for which a military system can remain in combat before having to withdraw due to depleted resources. The definition is not precise for example the combat endurance of an aircraft , without qualification, is usually the time the aircraft can remain at an altitude suitable for combat, but in a particular theatre of operations it is the time it can remain in the area of combat. During the Battle of Britain the combat endurance of German Fighter aircraft fighters was the time they could remain over United Kingdom Britain , i.e., their inherent combat endurance less the time to travel from their base to Britain, and the time to return about 15 minutes. The US Department of Defense and NATO define endurance as, The time an aircraft can continue flying, or a ground vehicle or ship can continue operating, under specified conditions, e.g., without refueling. Combat endurance training is also used for a system of physical training associated with endurance stamina . Endurance is sometimes erroneously equated with range aircraft range . The two concepts are distinctly different range is a measure of distance flown while endurance is a measure of time spent in the air . For example, a typical sailplane exhibits high endurance characteristics but poor range characteristics. Endurance can be written as math E int t 1 t 2 dt int W 1 W 2 frac dW F int W 2 W 1 frac dW F math where W stands for fuel weight, F for fuel flow, t for time. Endurance can factor into aviation design in a number of ways. Some aircraft, such as the P 3 Orion or Lockheed U 2 U 2 spyplane, require high endurance characteristics as part of their mission profile often referred to as loiter time on target . 1. Endurance training

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Endurance training is the deliberate act of exercising to increase endurance stamina and endurance . Exercises for endurance tends to be Aerobic exercise aerobic in nature versus Anaerobic respiration anaerobic movements. Aerobic exercise develops slow twitch muscles. Performing these exercises strengthens and elongates the muscles for preparation of extended periods of use. Motivation Athletes train for endurance to compete in 5000 metres 5k and 10000 metres 10k races, half marathon s, marathon s, ultra marathon s, triathlon s, Ironman competition s, Challenge riding Century bike ride s, mountain biking , cross country skiing and so on. Non athletes can train similarly with an aerobic workout to burn calories and fat. It is known that long distance training LDT for endurance over long periods of time can be helpful to joints and ligaments as one ages. Physiological effects Long term endurance training induces many physiological adaptations both centrally and peripherally mediated. Central cardiovascular adaptations include decreased heart rate , increased red blood cell count, increased blood plasma which reduces blood viscosity and increased cardiac output as well as total mitochondrial volume in the muscle fiber s used in the training i.e. the thigh muscles in runners will have more mitochondria than swimmers . Adaptations of the peripheral include capillarization , that is an increase in the surface area that both the venous and arterial capillaries supply. This also allows for increased heat dissipation during strenuous exercise. The muscles heighten their glycogen and fat storing capabilities in endurance athletes in order to increase the length in time in which they can perform work. Catabolism also improves increasing the athletes capacity to use fat and glycogen stores as an energy source. These metabolic processes are known as glycogenolysis , glycolysis and lipolysis .
