Image Fort Care , Antibes, France.jpg thumb 250px Fort Carr in Antibes File ANTIBOL 2.jpg thumb 250px left Fort Carr , Antibes Fort Carr is a 16th century fort on the outskirts of Antibes , France . During the 17th century, the fort was redeveloped by Vauban . The fort was used in the making of the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again . Fortifications at Antibes were probably first built by the Romans. In 1553, a tower called la tour Saint Florent was built around a preexisting chapel. Henry III had four bastions added in 1565, whereupon it became Fort Carr the squared fort . In the 1680 s Vauban strengthened Fort Carr , adding traverses to protect against ricochet fire and exchanging the stone parapets, which were liable to scatter deadly splinters when hit by shot, for brick ones. Vauban also enlarged the embrasures and added outer walls to the fortification. After Vauban s work, the fort was designed to take 18 cannon. The entrance to the fort is through a triangular work that protrudes from the walls, which is loopholed and pierced by a heavy wooden door. From here, there is a narrow bridge that leads into the fort itself via the flank of one of the arrow headed bastions. Inside, there are barrack buildings for officers and men as well as the ancient chapel, which has been preserved through the successive stages of military development of the site. In addition to improving the defences of Fort Carr , Vauban fortified Antibes itself, adding a land front of 4 arrow headed bastions around the town, as well seaward fortifications, including a bastion on the breakwater closing the harbor. File cloche vdp.jpg thumb 400px A VDP cloche of Block 4, Ouvrage Schoenenbourg , with a ventilation mushroom in the foreground The VDP cloche was an element of the Maginot Line fortifications. A cloche bell was a fixed and non retractable firing position made of a thick iron casting which shielded its occupant. By comparison, turrets could be rotated and sometimes lowered so that only the top shell was exposed. VDP cloches were used for observation of the surrounding area for artillery direction. VDP is an acronym for Vision Directe et P riscopique . By comparison with the GFM cloche , the VDP cloche had narrower ports and was consequently lower in profile. Description VDP cloches were equipped with three embrasures or crenels for direct vision, providing protection to observers. VDP cloches were also equipped with periscope s that allowed a greater arc of view. The cloches were embedded in a thick concrete carapace over a combat, entrance or observation block element of a largely subterranean Maginot fortification. A platform, identical to that used in the GFM cloche, was installed for the observer within the cloche. No armament was fitted. 64 VDP cloches were installed along the Maginot Line. ref name hetou2 1 cite book last Mary first Jean Yves coauthors Hohnadel, Alain Sicard, Jacques title Hommes et Ouvrages de la Ligne Maginot, Tome 2 publisher Histoire & Collections date 2009 page 72 isbn 2 908182 97 1 language French ref VP cloche The similar VP Vision P riscopique cloche lacked direct observation ports, presenting a much lower profile.
