  1. Arc blow

Arc blow is the, usually unwanted, deflection of the arc during arc welding . There are two types of arc blow commonly known in the electric welding industry magnetic and thermal . Magnetic arc blow image Arcblow1.gif thumb Eddy current s in an arc blow cross section. Magnetic arc blow or arc wander is the deflection of welding filler material within an electric arc deposit by a build up of magnetic force surrounding the weld pool . Magnetic arc blow can occur because of Workpiece connection Joint design Poor fit up Improper settings Atmospheric conditions Magnetic arc blow is popularly attributed to a change in the direction of electric current current as it flows into and through the workpiece. Magnetic arc blow is known to begin at field densities as low as 10  gauss unit gauss and becomes severe at densities of, equal to or greater than, 40  gauss it is directional and can be classified as forward or backward moving along the joint, but can occasionally occur to the sides depending on the orientation of the poles to the workpiece. Magnetic arc blow is more common in DC welding than in AC welding. Thermal arc blow Thermal arc blow is widely attributed to variations in resistance within the base metal created by the weld pool as it is moved across the workpiece. Thermal arc blow can occur because of Improper surface preparation Improper travel speed Thermal arc blow is not as severe as magnetic arc blow , but can still leave undesirable defects in the weld deposit. unreferenced date July 2009 Arc Flashlight LLC was an American manufacturer that produced innovative LED flashlight s. Arc Flashlight LLC began operation May 2001, and went out of business September 22, 2004. The founder and designer of Arc, Peter Gransee, started a new company MTD LLC in December 2004 which continues the Arc brand and design. http www.arcflashlight.com faqs.htm Arc has historical significance since several innovative models were the inspiration for flashlights later produced by other companies. These products included the first LED flashlight powered by a single AAA battery, the first temperature compensated LED flashlight, and the first microprocessor controlled Luxeon Star flashlight. Possibly the most significant innovation was the first flashlight using the high power Luxeon Star LED, the Arc LS the first solid state LED flashlight to produce output comparable to incandescent light bulb incandescent bulb designs. The name Arc came from intense white light some LEDs produce, looking similar to the color of an electric Arc welding arc welder . Typical models included the Arc AAA, powered by a single AAA battery, and the Arc6 microprocessor controlled flashlight using a single CR123 battery. The metal plasma arc produces tremendous amounts of light energy ... they are often ablated and eroded from the radiant effects. Examples In general, arc flash ... does not provide sufficient energy to cause an arc flash hazard. Most 480 V electrical services have sufficient capacity to cause an arc flash hazard. Medium voltage equipment above 600 V is higher energy and therefore a higher potential for an arc flash hazard. Technol. volume 9 pages 280 283 doi 10.1088 1009 0630 9 3 06 See also Electric arc Gas discharge Glow discharge Cathodic arc deposition Category Electric ...A vacuum arc can arise when the surfaces of metal electrode s in contact with a good vacuum begin to emit electron s either through heating thermionic emission or via an electric field that is sufficient to cause field electron emission . Once initiated, a vacuum arc can persist since the freed particles gain kinetic energy from the electric field, heating the metal surfaces through high speed particle collisions. This process can create an incandescent cathode spot which frees more particles, thereby sustaining the arc. At sufficiently high currents an incandescent anode spot may also be formed. Electrical discharge in vacuum is important for certain types of vacuum tube s and for high voltage vacuum switch es. The thermionic vacuum arc TVA is a new type of plasma source, which generates a pure metal and ceramic vapour plasma containing ions with a directed energy. TVA discharges can be ignited in high vacuum conditions between a heated cathode electron gun and an anode tungsten crucible containing the material. The accelerated electron beam, incident on the anode, heats the crucible, together with its contents, to a high temperature. After establishing a steadystate density of the evaporating anode material atoms, and when the voltage applied is high enough, a bright discharge is ignited between the electrodes. 1. Arc mapping

Arc mapping is a technique used in fire investigation ref Name NFPA 921 cite book last National Fire Protection Association title User s Manual for NFPA 921 publisher Jones & Bartlett Publishers date 2006 location url http books.google.com books?id cm1LUYyXar0C&pg PA87&lpg PA87&dq 22arc mapping 22 wikipedia&source web&ots p3c0quoVJq&sig 30SFLmE W58EG63M8GGUOCHddcU doi isbn 0763744026 page 87 ref and is usually performed by a forensic engineering forensic electrical engineering electrical engineer . It relies on finding the locations of electric arc electrical arcs and other electrical faults that occurred during the fire the locations of the electrical faults can then, under some circumstances, indicate the progression of the fire over time. The basis of the technique is the assumption that, when fire or hot gases created by the fire impinges on an electrical line whether or not protected by a conduit , it will melt the wire insulation and cause an electrical fault at the first point that it reaches on the electrical line. Note that, for this to occur, the electrical line must be energized at the time that fire hits it. The ultimate goal of arc mapping is often to determine the point of origin of the fire. A common assumption used in reaching this goal is that the fire expands uniformly in all directions as it burns, and maintains a circular shape centered on the point of origin therefore, when an electrical fault occurs on an electrical line, the point of origin is on a perpendicular to that point. Care must be taken with this assumption, however, because in many cases, fire does not extend uniformly in particular, large local fuel loads , venting , and air currents have a strong effect on fire progression. Several other factors affect the locations where electrical faults occur. Electrical faults do not always occur where fire first reaches a conduit, but preferentially ..., a significant part of arc map analysis is determining the order in which sections of electrical ...   more details
