    The Edinburgh School refers to a group of 20th century artists connected with Edinburgh . Most studied at Edinburgh College of Art during or soon after the First World War, and some taught there together in the mid 20th century. As friends and colleagues, they discussed painting and were influenced by one another s work. It was 10 years since the first British women had been licensed to practise as doctors, and female medical education was in its early days it would be another 6 years before Scottish universities would Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women admit women students . Jex Blake had friends in Edinburgh , as well as opponents, from her earlier Edinburgh Seven unsuccessful campaign to persuade the University of Edinburgh to educate women in their medical school. She arranged for the new women students to gain clinical experience at Leith Hospital . Her uncompromising approach to discipline led to problems. When two sisters won a court case challenging their expulsion, the bad publicity meant that both the school and Jex Blake herself lost support, and some students moved to Glasgow , London and Dublin there were no other places in Great Britain or Ireland where women could study medicine at that time.     The School of Chemistry is an academic unit of the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland, responsible for research, teaching, outreach and commercialisation in Chemistry. The teaching of Chemistry at Edinburgh began almost 300 hundred years ago in 1713 when James Crawford was appointed to the Chair of Physick and Chymistry. The department has occupied many sites in its history, from a house at the top of Robertson s Close in the city centre, to purpose built facilities in the central campus at Old College through to its current location at King s Buildings. Each move has brought with it expansions in size and status until the department occupied the position it does now, as one of the world s leading Chemistry teaching and research establishments. Today the department carries on the traditions of Chemistry at Edinburgh both in teaching and research. The collaborative research School formed with St Andrews Chemistry department to form EaStCHEM has strengthened research in Scotland in the chemical sciences.
