Parthenius III was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 1656 1657. Born in Lesvos , in 1639 he was elected metropolitan of Chios and on 31 July 1656 he became Ecumenical Patriarch, succeeding Ecumenical Patriarch Joannicius II of Constantinople Joannicius II . As patriarch he honoured his predecessor Patriarch Cyril of Constantinople Cyril Loukaris holding a magnificent burial for his remains. He was known for his education and his regularity. He was accused by the Jesuits and the sovereign of Wallachia as a conspirator against the Ottoman Empire and though the accusations were proven false, Sultan Mehmed IV ordered his beheading. Thus he was hanged at the Gate of the Hook Parmak Kapi of Constantinople on 1 April 1657. He stayed hanged for three days and then was thrown into the sea. His body was found by Christians and was buried in Kamariotissa Monastery in Chalki Turkish island Chalki . He was venerated a holy martyr and his memory is celebrated on 24 March. He is therefore sometimes not counted amongst the patriarchs, and Patriarch Callinicus IV of Constantinople Callinicus IV , who was Patriarch for a short time in 1757, is then numbered as the third of that name. He was Bishop of Heracleia and a very ambitious man who used any means in order to become Patriarch. He had tried many times unsuccessfully to seize the throne. In 1726, he plotted with some high ranking Greek civil servants against the incumbent Patriarch, Cyril V, and by bribing the Grand Vizier managed to depose his rival and ascend the Throne as Patriarch Callinicus III. It was formed in 1848, when former Metropolitanate of Karlovci was elevated to the rank of patriarchate. The Patriarchate of Karlovci existed until 1920, when it was merged with Metropolitanate of Belgrade to form the Patriarchate of Serbia . The seat of the Patriarchate was in Sremski Karlovci Karlovci today Sremski Karlovci , Serbia . History At the May Assembly in Karlovci in 1848, the Serbs living in the Habsburg Monarchy proclaimed the creation of the Serbian Vojvodina , a Serb autonomous region within the Monarchy. The metropolitan of Karlovci, Josif Raja i , was also proclaimed a patriarch, thus the Metropolitanate of Karlovci became a Patriarchate. In the same year when the Patriarchate of Karlovci was created, the Romanians that were previously under jurisdiction of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci proclaimed their separation from the Serbian church, and creation of their own. However, this was not recognized in that time, thus the separate Romanian church was created in 1864, by the emperor s decree. The last patriarch, Lukijan Bogdanovi , was murdered in 1913. After his death, patriarchal throne remained vacant for the last seven years of its existence. In 1920, the Patriarchate of Karlovci was merged into the newly formed Patriarchate of Serbia .
