Echo sounding is the technique of using sound pulses directed from the surface or from a submarine vertically down to measure the distance to the bottom by means of sound waves. This information is then typically used for navigation purposes or in order to obtain depths for charting purposes. Echo sounding can also refer to hydroacoustic echo sounders defined as active sound in water sonar used to study fish. Hydroacoustic assessments have traditionally employed mobile surveys from boats to evaluate fish biomass and spatial distributions. Conversely, fixed location techniques use stationary transducers to monitor passing fish. 1. Depth sounding

cleanup date December 2008 Depth sounding refers to a historical nautical term for measuring depth it is often referred to simply as sounding . Sounding is finding the depth of a given point in a body of water. Sounding data is used in bathymetry to make maps of the floor of a body of water. ref Sounding Pole to Sea Beam, NOAA, http www.history.noaa.gov stories tales poletobeam.html ref Soundings were traditionally given on nautical charts in fathoms . The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA , the agency responsible for bathymetric data in the United States still uses feet on charts, but metres have become the international standard for measuring depth. Sounding was originally done by hand with sounding poles or a weighted sounding line for greater depths. Sometimes soundings were taken to establish position, a navigation function then, rather than safety alone. Soundings of this type were usually taken using tallow coated leads with a big wad of tallow in the bottom concavity. The tallow would bring up part of the bottom sediment sand, pebbles, clay, shells, etc. and allow the ship s officers to better estimate their position. Traditional terms for soundings are a source for several important common expressions in the English language, notably deep six a sounding of 6 fathoms and Mark Twain from by the mark, twain , for a 2 fathoms . The term lives on in today s world in echo sounding , the technique of using sonar to measure depth. See Fishfinder fathometer . References reflist Category Navigation ...   more details

  1. Automatic sounding

Unreferenced date December 2009 In telecommunication , automatic sounding is the testing of selected channels for quality by providing a very brief identifying transmission that may be used by other stations to evaluate connectivity, and availability , and to identify known working channels for immediate or later use for telecommunication communications or calling. Often used to maintain Telecommunication circuit connectivity in digital communications Shortwave high frequency radio networks. Automatic soundings are primarily intended to increase the efficiency of the automatic link establishment ALE function, thereby increasing system throughput . In ALE, the sounding information consists of a heavily Forward Error Correction error corrected short message identifying the sender. Recipients decode it and use the bit error rate to calculate and store a channel, node, quality Row database tuple . As ionospheric conditions and mobile node locations change, these quality tuples will shift. The stored data can be used to maximize the chance that the best channel to link with a given partner will be chosen first. 1. Urethral sounding

Nofootnotes date April 2007 Sounding or urethral sounding is the medical use of probes called sound medical instrument sound s to increase the inner diameter of the urethra and to locate obstructions in it. Sounds are also used to stretch the urethra in order to receive piercing. Urethral sounding and urethral play are also used to refer to this practice in a sexual context. Urethral play can involve the introduction of either soft or rigid items into the urinary meatus meatus of the penis as well as farther in . Objects such as sounds are usually only inserted about halfway into the glans and can usually be easily retrieved. Other toys and items, such as catheters, may be introduced deeper in some cases even into the bladder. Some items may even be allowed to curl several times or expand within the bladder. This action in the male may be directly or indirectly associated with stimulation of the prostate gland and some types of bladder control. Risks If not conducted carefully, sounding carries a risk of irritation, tearing of the urethra, or of urinary tract infection . Infections may become serious if they progress to the bladder or kidneys, and should be referred to a doctor. Use of poor quality steel can lead to infection. ref http www.penisplugsablaze.com Testimonials.php ref The insertion of foreign bodies into the urethra can present serious medical problems see urethral foreign body insertion . 1. Ionospheric sounding

In telecommunication and radio science, an ionospheric sounding is a technique that provides real time data on high frequency ionospheric dependent radio propagation , using a basic system consisting of a synchronized transmitter and receiver. The time Propagation delay delay between transmission telecommunications transmission and reception is translated into effective ionospheric layer altitude. Vertical incident sounding uses a collocated transmitter and receiver and involves directing a range of frequencies vertically to the ionosphere and measuring the values of the reflected returned signals to determine the effective ionosphere layer altitude. This technique is also used to determine the critical frequency . Oblique sounders use a transmitter at one end of a given propagation path, and a synchronized receiver, usually with an oscilloscope type display ionogram , at the other end. The transmitter emits a stepped or swept frequency Signalling telecommunication signal which is displayed or measured at the receiver. The measurement converts time delay to effective altitude of the ionospheric layer . The ionogram display shows the effective altitude of the ionospheric layer as a function of frequency.
