Currently there is a swimming pool and leisure centre, cinema, several food restaurants, bowling facilities and large amount of car parking spaces. Finchley Lido is extremely popular with the local population of Finchley at weekends, as it is one of the only cinema complexes in this area of North London . In the summer of 2008, the outdoor pool will open for weekends only in May and for the whole of June. History The Finchley Open Air Pool was designed by P T Harrison, of fame from Finchley Borough Council . The main heated pool opened in 17 September 1931 and stayed open until 11 November. The following year it was officially opened on 26 March, and on 22 April 1932 the Duke of York to become King George VI unveiled a ceremonial wall tablet made of Staffordshire marble , which can be seen to this date. This tablet can now be seen on display behind the counter of Nando s restaurant, which was built around the original site. The main heated pool measured convert 165 ft m abbr on x 80  ft, depth ft 3 ins to convert 10 ft m abbr on , with two fountains. This pool contained at most 456,250 gallons 1,727,094 litres and had a diving stage of a similar design to Barking Lido, containing a 2 stage platform. The Hampstead route now the route Haverstock Hill, Rosslyn Hill and North End Road contained two steep hills either side of Hampstead Village and was difficult for horses with carriages to negotiate when muddy. The new turnpike was built at the same time as the improvements which created Regents Park . It started from what was then called the New Road now Euston Road , Marylebone Road the first London bypass and ran north. As the road crossed the boundary of Finchley , its name became Regents Park Road , indicating the destination of the turnpike from Finchley. The turnpike ended when it joined the A1 road Great Britain Great North Road as Ballards Lane . There was a tollgate at Childs Hill . After construction, many grand houses were built along its length, especially near to what are now Fortune Green , Childs Hill and Golders Green . It was once served by Finchley Road railway station on the Midland Main Line , but that has long sinced closed. It is still served by Finchley Road tube station and Finchley Road & Frognal railway station on the North London Line .     Mr. Finchley is a fictional character in three comic novels by Victor Canning , a novelist who later gained great success with thrillers. He first appears in Canning s very first book, Mr. Finchley Discovers his England , published in 1934 and as Mr. Finchley s Holiday in the United States USA in 1935. Notable adventures He is introduced as a 45 year old London solicitor s clerk who is told by his boss to take a holiday for the first time in his life. On his way to the railway station he agrees to keep watch on a car, goes to sleep on the back seat, and wakes to find it being driven off by a thief and pursued by the police. This is the first of around 20 disconnected episodes which take Mr Finchley gradually west to Land s End and then back to London . In the second book, Mr. Finchley Goes to Paris 1938 , he befriends and in the end adopts an orphan boy, and in the third, Mr. Finchley Takes the Road 1940 , he marries and explores the county of Kent in a horse drawn caravan. In other media A series of radio dramatisations were made by the BBC in the 1980s featuring Richard Griffiths , and these were rebroadcast in 2005 on BBC 7 .
