ClevelandEastOhio Gas Explosion occurred on the afternoon of Friday, October 20, 1944. The resulting gas leak , explosion and Conflagration fires killed 130 people and destroyed a one square mile area on Cleveland, Ohio s east side. The tank was located near Lake Erie on East 61st Street, and winds from the lake pushed the vapor into a mixed use section of Cleveland, where it dropped into the sanitary sewer sewer lines via the catch basin s located in the street gutter s. As the gas mixture flowed and mixed with air and sewer gas, the mixture ignited. In the ensuing explosion, manhole covers launched skyward as jets of fire erupted from depths of the sewer lines. One manhole cover was found several miles east in the Cleveland neighborhood of Glenville, Cleveland Glenville . At first it was thought that the disaster was contained, and spectators returned home thinking that the matter was being taken care of by the fire department . Transit operations were later passed over to the Cleveland Transit System , the precursor to the current Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority . The company owned a fleet of PCC streetcar s. Though National City Lines never owned the system in Cleveland, General Motors did negotiate the sale of buses to the city, resulting in the shutdown of the Cleveland streetcars streetcar system . In Cleveland, complaints were made to the FBI after the mayor and city councilors were seen driving around in new General Motors cars. Mayor Raymond T. Miller did receive a new car within a month of General Motors winning the contract for new buses. The FBI refused to investigate based on high profile nature of the people targeted. The Cleveland streetcars were sold to the Toronto Transit Commission , where they remained in service for thirty years until 1982. Others were sold to the Berlin and Waterloo Street Railway Company . It consists of three vertical stripes, of equal width, in red, white and blue respectively. The center white stripe bears the American shield with the word Cleveland across its center, and the year 1796 in red, at its base, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The outline of the lower half of the shield is in red and of the upper in blue. In the upper left hand corner of the shield are an anvil, hammer and wheel, and in the upper right hand corner an anchor, windlass and oars. Under the shield is the city s motto, Progress and Prosperity. History The Cleveland flag was designed in 1895 by Susan Hepburn, then a Cleveland high school student. Repetitions against the flag stalled its establishment, but by October 21, it was approved by Cleveland City Council . On February 21, 1896, the year in which celebrated its centennial, an ordinance was put in place on the banner. Mayor Robert E. McKisson approved it on February 26. The city s motto of Progress and Prosperity was not added until the 1960s. Symbolism Both the colors and the use of the American shield represent patriotism, something that many felt would unite the city. 1796 is the year in which Cleveland was founded by Gen. Moses Cleaveland . The anvil, hammer and wheel represent the city s heavy industry. The anchor, windlass and oars represent sea maritime interests Cleveland is a major port on the Great Lakes . The theater was originally named Keith s Palace Theater after Benjamin Franklin Keith B. F. Keith , founder of the Keith Albee chain of vaudeville and movie theaters. It was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Rapp and Rapp in the Neo Renaissance French Renaissance style , and originally housed live two a day vaudeville shows. The 2 million theater opened in the Keith Building on November 6, 1922, seating 3,100. The interior was clad with Carrara marble and 154 crystal chandeliers, and the main lobby, dubbed the Great Hall, was decorated with over 30 paintings. City of EastCleveland Case citation 431 U.S. 494 1977 , is a United States Supreme Court case. The Court held 5 4 that an ordinance which restricted housing to a single family and defined the family as a nuclear family , rather than an extended family , was unconstitutional and a violation of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution Fourteenth Amendment . Background Appellant was a grandmother who was a resident of EastCleveland, OhioEastCleveland , Ohio , and owned a home with her son and two grandsons, who were first cousins. The City of EastCleveland created a housing ordinance limiting occupancy of a dwelling unit to members of a single family, in part because of an influx of children from Cleveland seeking the better schools in EastCleveland. The ordinance defined a family as a nuclear family. The appellant was convicted of violating the ordinance and appealed. The City of EastCleveland then argued that the ordinance was constitutional under Village of Belle Terre v. Boraas , 416 U.S. 1 ussc 272 365 1926 , which upheld an ordinance imposing limits on the types of groups that could occupy a single dwelling unit. Holding The Supreme Court held ...
