Its function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles inside the middle ear. The malleus bone bridges the gap between the eardrum and the other ossicles. Rupture or perforation of the eardrum can lead to conductive hearing loss . Development The eardrum forms from the joining of the expanding first pharyngeal pouch and pharyngeal groove groove . In humans, this happens around day 30 of gestation . The endoderm lined first pharyngeal pouch expands to form the tympanic cavity , which subsequently envelops the inner ear ossicles . Simultaneously, the first pharyngeal groove, which is lined with ectoderm, expands to form the developing external auditory meatus . Separated by a thin layer of splanchnic mesoderm , the tympanic cavity and external auditory meatus join to form the tympanic membrane. As a result, the tympanic membrane is one of very few adult structures that is derived from all three germ layer s. The operation to insert the tube involves a myringotomy . The tube itself is made in a variety of designs. The most commonly used type is shaped like a grommet or T . When it is necessary to keep the middle ear ventilated for a very long period, a T shaped tube may be used. Materials used to construct the tube are most often plastics such as silicone or Teflon . Stainless steel tubes exist, but are no longer in frequent use. Although myringotomy with tube insertion can be performed under local anesthesia during a regular doctor s appointment in co operative adults, patients requiring tube insertion are very often young children. Since damage to the ear is possible unless the patient stays quite still while being manipulated, for any patient who may have difficulty lying still during the procedure, myringotomy and tube insertion is performed under a brief general anesthesia. The insertion of tympanostomy tubes is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children.
