Unreferenced date July 2009 Japanese name Wada nihongo Wada Ei 1857 1929 was a textile worker and memoirist during the Meiji Era in Japan, daughter of samurai from Matsushiro, Shinano Province . She is known for writing a memoir called the Tomioka Diary Tomioka Nikki in which she chronicled her life among the female workers in the Tomioka silk mill . She was among the daughters of samurai who were recruited in 1873, the sixth year of the Meiji period, from across the nation for practical training over a period of two to three years in the silk production process. They would later become trainers in silk manufacture in their own prefectures. Upon leaving Tomioka in 1874, the government awarded Wada and her colleagues medals and the special title Women Spinners Victory Battalion . She became a trainer at the Saij Village Silk Reeling Factory later Rokk sha mill in Matsushiro , Nagano Prefecture . Wada married an army officer, who later died in 1913 from wounds he sustained in the Russo Japanese war. She began composing the Tomioka Nikki while living at the Furukawa Mine company house at the Ashio Copper Mine , where her son was a manager. The nickname refers to the hall s dome shaped roof which collapsed twice during construction. The building s official name was Sporthalle Feldstra e . Design, planning and construction In 1992, the city council of Halstenbek decided to spend 5 million Deutschmarks on the construction of a new sports hall on a property on Feldstra e formerly occupied by a tree nursery. In 1993, the council approved the design submitted by architects Poitiers & Partner from Hamburg . Architect Andr Poitiers design featured an underground field under an oval glass dome, with locker rooms and equipment rooms also located below the ground and around the field. During the planning, the estimated cost already rose to more than 12 million Deutschmarks. Construction finally began in September 1995. In 1996, the estimated total cost was 15.6 million Deutschmarks. 1997 The first collapse In the early morning hours of February 5, 1997, the partially completed dome collapsed during severe weather. The girders supplying the dome damaged the scaffolding located below. As the collapse occurred during the night, fortunately no one was hurt. In the aftermath of the collapse, experts determined that the collapse was only due to the severe weather conditions and that the structural design of the dome was flawless.
