  1. Dymaxion

Image Dymaxion house.jpg thumb Dymaxion House as installed in Henry Ford Museum The word Dymaxion is a brand name that Buckminster Fuller used for several of his inventions. It is a portmanteau of the words dy namic max imum tens ion however, it has also been reported that the name is a combination of the words dynamic, maximum, and ion, per the http www.automuseum.org NAM collections dymaxion2.shtml National Automobile Museum . The term was invented for Fuller around 1928 by Waldo Warren , an advertising expert who had become well known previously by inventing the word radio for what people used to call the wireless at the time. Fact date July 2008 A brand name was needed for the display of Fuller s first architectural model, later to be known as the Dymaxion house . In order to invent a word, Warren spent two days listening to Fuller and trying to get a feel for the type of language he used. He then played randomly with syllables from typical Fuller words, until the word Dymaxion was born. Fuller was excited about the word and used it for many of his inventions during the decades to follow, including the Dymaxion house , the Dymaxion car , and the Dymaxion map Dymaxion World Map . Dymaxion also came to describe a polyphasic sleep schedule he followed, consisting of four 30 minute naps throughout the day. He also renamed his elaborate journal, in which he sought to document his life as an experiment with the greatest possible detail, as the Dymaxion Chronofile . 1. Dymaxion Chronofile

The Dymaxion Chronofile is Buckminster Fuller s attempt to document his life as completely as possible. He created a very large Scrapbooking scrapbook in which he documented his life every 15 minutes from 1920 to 1983. The scrapbook contains copies of all correspondence, bills, notes, sketches, and clippings from newspapers. The total collection is estimated to be 270 feet 80 m worth of paper. This is said to be the most documented human life in history. quote If somebody kept a very accurate record of a human being, going through the era from the Gay Nineties Gay 90s , from a very different kind of world through the turn of the century as far into the twentieth century as you might live. 1. Dymaxion Deployment Unit

A Dymaxion Deployment Unit DDU is a structure designed in 1940 by Buckminster Fuller consisting of a 20 foot circular hut constructed of corrugated steel looking much like a grain bin . The interior was insulated, finished with wallboard and port holes. The Army Signal Corps commissioned Fuller in 1942 to develop 200 units as quickly as possible. The units were manufactured by the Butler Manufacturing company and were deployed all around the world prior to the US entry into World War II. The cost of each unit at the time was 1,250. When the US entered World War II, a steel shortage ensued which resulted in the eventual cancellation of DDU production. 1. Soleto Map

The Soleto Map is an ancient map , which depicts Salento on a small piece of ostrakon derived from a terracotta vase. Background The map was discovered in Soleto southern Italy by Belgium Belgian archaeologist Thierry van Compernolle of Montpellier University on August 21, 2003. The map itself dates back to 500 BC and contains letters derived from a Greek script . The languages expressed on the map are both Ancient Greek language Greek and Messapian language Messapian . Moreover, the Soleto Map describes the city of Taranto called Taras , as well as other cities of Salento such as Soleto, Santa Maria di Leuca Leuca , Ugento , and Otranto . The map went on public display in 2005 at the Archaeological National Museum of Taranto. Controversy Even though the Soleto Map is considered the oldest map in Western culture Western civilization , there are allegations that it is a forgery. In the January February 2006 issue of the Netherlands Dutch newspaper Geschiedenis Magazine , Dutch archaeologist Douwe Yntema of Vrije University in Amsterdam found the authenticity of the map questionable. Even though the ostrakon is ancient, the authenticity of the engravings are dubious. According to Yntema, the map looks like a school atlas with placenames engraved with north at the top. Moreover, the Soleto Map shows the towns as points rather than house symbols found on other ancient maps. Finally, the engravings follow the precise borders of the ostrakon itself, which can lead anyone to interpret the Soleto Map as being made after the terracotta vase was first broken.
