They are structures which carry milk toward the nipple in a Lactation lactating female. Lactiferous duct the complex series of ducts is a system within the breast that drains into a main duct, the lactiferous duct, which ends at the nipple via a secretory pore. The large and intermediate ducts are lined by columnar epithelium supported by myoepithelial cells. Context date December 2009 Cleanup date December 2009 The perilymphatic duct is where the perlyphatic space i.e., the vestibule of the inner ear is connected to the subarachnoid space. This works as a type of shunt to eliminate excess perilymph fluid from the perlymphatic space around the cochlea of the ear . Perilymph is continuous with cerebrospinal fluid CSF in the subarachnoid space. CSF pressure abnormalities do not generally have clinical impact on the inner ear which is explained physically by the bore diameter of the perilymphatic duct and its length. This duct goes through the Human skull skull and is parallel with but not directly associated with the endolyphatic duct . The duct is lined by an epithelium. It passes through the buccal fat pad buccal fat , buccopharyngeal fascia, and buccinator muscle then opens into the vestibule of the mouth next to the maxillary second molar tooth . The buccinator acts as a valve that prevents inflation of the duct during blowing. Running along with the duct superiorly is the transverse facial artery and upper buccal nerve running along with the duct inferiorly is the lower buccal nerve. Pathology Blockage, whether caused by Salivary duct calculus salivary duct stones or external compression, may cause pain and swelling of the parotid gland parotitis . An intralobular duct is the portion of an exocrine gland inside a lobule , leading directly from acinus to interlobular duct . It is composed of two subdivisions, the intercalated duct and the striated duct . In the human mammary gland, the intralobular duct is a part of the glandular system that resides within the lobules. Lobules contain clusters of ducts whose secretory alveolies are drained by the intralobular duct. Excess tears flow through nasolacrimal duct which drains into the inferior nasal meatus . This is the reason the nose starts to run when a person is crying or has watery eyes from an allergy, and why one can sometimes taste eye drops. Like the lacrimal sac, the duct is lined by stratified columnar epithelium containing mucus secreting goblet cells , and is surrounded by connective tissue. Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct leads to the excess overflow of tears called epiphora medical epiphora . A congenital obstruction can cause cystic expansion of the duct and is called a dacrocystocele or Timo cyst. Persons with dry eye conditions can be fitted with punctal plug s that seal the ducts to limit the amount of fluid drainage and retain moisture. It usually lies next to the cystic artery . It is of variable length. It contains a Spiral valves of Heister spiral valve , which does not provide much resistance to the flow of bile. Function Bile can flow in both directions between the gallbladder and the common hepatic duct and the common bile duct. In this way, bile is stored in the gallbladder in between meal times. The hormone cholecystokinin , when stimulated by a fatty meal, promotes bile secretion by increased production of hepatic bile, contraction of the gall bladder, and relaxation of the Sphincter of Oddi . Clinical significance Gallstones can enter and obstruct the cystic duct, preventing the flow of bile. The increased pressure in the gallbladder leads to swelling and pain. This pain is sometimes referred to as a gallbladder attack because of its sudden onset. During a cholecystectomy , the cystic duct is clipped two or three times and a cut is made between the clips, freeing the gallbladder to be taken out. The straight or collecting tubes commence in the radiate part of the renal cortex , where they receive the curved ends of the distal convoluted tubule s. They unite at short intervals with one another, the resulting tubes presenting a considerable increase in caliber, so that a series of comparatively large tubes passes from the bases of the Medullary ray anatomy medullary ray s into the renal pyramids . In the medulla the tubes of each pyramid converge to join a central tube, the duct of Bellini , which finally opens on the summit of one of the renal papilla e the contents of the tube are therefore discharged into one of the renal calyces . Eponym So named in honor of its discoverer, Italy Italian anatomist Lorenzo Bellini 1643 1704 . Cancer of Bellini s Duct Collecting duct, or Bellini s duct, carcinoma is a relatively rare subtype of renal cell carcinoma RCC , accounting for less than 1 of all RCCs Kennedy et al, 1990 Rumpelt et al, 1991 Carter et al, 1992 St rkel et al, 1997 Srigley and Eble, 1998 Swartz et al, 2002 .
