  1. Dual control theory

Dual control theory is a branch of control theory that deals with the control of systems whose characteristics are initially unknown. It is called dual because in controlling such a system the controller s objectives are twofold 1 Action To control the system as well as possible based on current system knowledge 2 Investigation To experiment with the system so as to learn about its behavior and control it better in the future. These two objectives may be partly in conflict. Dual control theory was developed by Alexander Aronovich Fel dbaum in 1960. He showed that in principle the optimal control optimal solution can be found by dynamic programming , but this is often impractical as a result a number of methods for designing sub optimal dual controllers have been devised. Example To use an Car analogy analogy if you are driving a new car you want to get to your destination cheaply and smoothly, but you also want to see how well the car accelerates, brakes and steers so as to get a better feel for how to drive it, so you will do some test manoeuvers for this purpose. Similarly a dual controller will inject a so called probing or exploration signal into the system that may detract from short term performance but will improve control in the future. 1. Dual process theory

In psychology , a dual process theory provides an account of how a phenomenon can occur in two different ways, or as a result of two different processes. Often, the two processes consist of an implicit automatic , unconscious mind unconscious process and an explicit controlled , consciousness conscious process. Verbalized explicit processes or attitudes and actions may change with persuasion or education though implicit process or attitudes usually take a long amount of time to change with the forming of new habits. Dual process theories can be found in social, personality, cognitive, and clinical psychology. History The foundations of dual process theory likely comes from William James . He believed that there were two different kinds of thinking associative and true reasoning. James theorizes that empirical thought was used for things like art and design work. For James, images and thoughts would come to mind of past experiences, providing ideas of comparison or abstractions. He claimed that associative knowledge was only from past experiences describing it as only reproductive . 1. Dual-coding theory

Dual coding theory , a theory of cognition, was first advanced by Allan Paivio of the University of Western Ontario . The theory postulates that both visual and verbal information are processed differently and along distinct channels with the human mind creating separate representations for information processed in each channel. Both visual and verbal codes for representing information are used to organize incoming information into knowledge that can be acted upon, stored, and retrieved for subsequent use. Each channel also has limitations. For example, humans have difficulty simultaneously attending to multiple auditory or visual cues, depending on expertise with the task or prior knowledge with the subject area. For example, a television documentary that shows images of plant and animal life in a rain forest while also simultaneously providing narration that describes the animal life could potentially provide for improved learning using the dual code theory because the visual and verbal information does not compete with each other. A multimedia presentation that shows multiple visuals such as an image of a speaker as well as the text that the speaker is reading, such as a series of bullet points, could overwhelm the viewer, depending on the person and the situation, because the viewer must now attend to two images. 1. Dual Presidency Theory

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date February 2009 The Dual Presidency Theory also sometimes referred to as the Two Presidencies Thesis is a theory proposed by the political scientist Aaron Wildavsky during the Cold War . Influenced by the time period of 1946 1964, the Dual Presidency Theory is based on the principle that there are two versions of the American President one who is concerned with domestic policy and one concerned with foreign policy. Wildavsky makes the claim that Presidents would prefer to focus foremost on foreign policy because he is granted more traditional, constitutional, and statutory authority when compared to his domestic policy powers. Wildavsky argues that presidents have assumed a more active role with regards to foreign policy because they are able to act more quickly than the United States Congress when pursuing foreign policy. Also, a lack of Advocacy group interest groups active in foreign policy allow the president more discretion when making a decision. However, since Wildavsky s time, the domestic impact of foreign policy has become more pronounced and important, blurring the lines between foreign and domestic affairs. Politics no longer stop at the waters edge because Congress receives more reliable information on foreign affairs. Foreign policy is very much controlled by partisan politics in the United States today. Presidents no longer may take the liberty to assume public support for his foreign policy initiatives and must strive to build and maintain domestic support for them instead. 1. Dual brain theory

The dual brain theory claims that the two cerebral hemisphere s of the brain may sense and react to the environment independently from one another and that as a result of traumatic experience, one half may dominate the other in order to reduce the traumatized hemisphere s exposure to harm. This theory is an extension of split brain studies of epilepsy epileptic patients having the corpus callosum severed in order to reduce seizures. These studies indicated the existence of two intact, autonomous minds. Studies of healthy people with intact corpus callosums also indicate differing abilities or emotional responses associated with the two hemispheres. Studies using the Wada test and others are cited. In addition the theory draws upon research by Werner Wittling, Stuart Dimond, Roger Drake, Patrizio Tessoldi, Edward Fouty and Stephen E. Levick. Dr. Fredric Schiffer claims to have experimented with lateralizing glasses which restrict patients to one side of the visual field or the other, in turn stimulating the associated hemisphere. http www.fsu.edu trauma v6i1a2.html Schiffer claims this allowed some patients to experience the world through the more submissive or immature self and to compare differing experiences and changes in emotional moods, simply by switching between glasses. The glasses are fabricated simply by taping over the right or left halves of both lenses of typical safety glasses. The glasses function according the properties of the optic tract , whereby the right halves of both retina s which see the left side of the field of view are each connected to the right hemisphere, and the left halves which see the right side of the field of view are each connected to the left hemisphere, via optic nerves , which partially cross at the optic chiasm . Theoretically, the patient could then relativize experience and escape from a single viewpoint or life experience. In this manner ... 1. Hard inheritance

Hard inheritance is the exact opposite of the term soft inheritance , coined by Ernst Mayr to contrast ideas about Biological inheritance inheritance . Hard inheritance states that characteristics of an organism s offspring passed on through DNA will not be affected by the actions that the parental organism performs during its lifetime. For example a medieval blacksmith who uses only his right arm to forge steel will not sire a son with a stronger right arm than left because the blacksmith s actions do not alter his genetic code. The hard inheritance model excludes ideas of Lamarckism . Inheritance due to usage and non usage is excluded. Inheritance follows ideas of the synthetic theory of evolution References Richards EJ May 2006 . Inherited epigenetic variation revisiting soft inheritance . Nat. Rev. 1. Partible inheritance

unreferenced date January 2008 Partible inheritance is a general term applied to systems of inheritance in which property may be apportioned among heir s. It contrasts in particular with primogeniture , which requires that the whole inheritance passes to the eldest son, and with agnatic seniority where the succession passes to next senior male. Partible inheritance systems are therefore common ones to be found, in both Common Law and Napoleonic Code based systems in the latter case, there may be further requirement implying division according to a scheme, such as equal shares for legitimate children. Partible inheritance has been common in clan nish tribal societies, an example of this pattern is so called Salic patrimony . Historically speaking, non partible inheritance has been associated with monarchies , and the wish that landed Estate house estate s be kept together as units. In the Middle Ages , the partible inheritance systems of for example the Carolingian Empire and Kievan Rus had the effect of dividing kingdoms into princely states and are often thought responsible for their decline of power. Partible inheritance was the generally accepted form of inheritance adopted by New Englanders in the 18th century. 1. Differential inheritance

Differential Inheritance is a common Inheritance object oriented programming inheritance model used by Prototype based programming prototype based programming languages such as JavaScript , Io programming language Io and NewtonScript . It operates on the principle that most objects are derived from other, more general objects, and only differ in a few small aspects while usually maintaining a list of pointers internally to other objects which the object differs from. An Analogy To think of differential inheritance, you think in terms of what is different. So for instance, when trying to describe to someone how Dumbo looks, you could tell them in terms of elephants Think of an elephant. Now Dumbo is a lot shorter, has big ears, no tusks, a little pink bow and can fly. Using this method, you don t need to go on and on about what makes up an elephant, you only need to describe the differences anything not explicitly different can be safely assumed to be the same. 1. Uniparental inheritance

Uniparental inheritance is a non mendelian form of inheritance that consists of the transmission of genotypes from one parental type to all progeny. That is, all the genes in offspring will originate from only the mother or only the father. This phenomena is most commonly observed in eukaryotic organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplast s. This is because such organelles contain their own DNA and are capable of independent mitotic replication that does not endure crossing over with the DNA from another parental type. Although uniparental inheritance is the most common form of inheritance in organelles, there is increased evidence of diversity. Some studies found doubly uniparental inheritance DUI and biparental transmission to exist in cells. Evidence suggests that even when there is biparental inheritance, crossing over doesn t always occur. Furthermore, there is evidence that the form of organelle inheritance varied frequently over time. Uniparental inheritance can be divided into multiple subtypes based on the pathway of inheritance. ref name article.pubs.nrc cnrc.gc.ca http article.pubs.nrc cnrc.gc.ca RPAS rpv?hm HInit&afpf g05 082.pdf&journal gen&volume 48 ref ref http www.pnas.org ... inheritance is almost the exclusive form of inheritance.
