Begun by Domitian in imitation of Greek odeon building odeon s neighbouring his Stadium of Domitian stadium to its south , it was completed or restored in 106 by Apollodorus of Damascus . The outline of its cavea is still preserved by the fa ade of the Palazzo Massimo , but the only actual remains is a cipoline monolithic column possibly part of the stage just in front of the Palazzo s rear fa ade. After Domitian s murder and the ascension of the Emperor Nerva , Aelianus laid siege to the Imperial Capital in order to force the capture of the men responsible for Domitian s death, who had not been punished by Nerva. Aelianus succeeded in his demands, greatly weakening the authority of the Emperor, so much so that Nerva realized that his position was no longer tenable without the support of an heir who had the approval of the Roman army. Within two or three months Nerva announced the adoption of the highly respected general Trajan as his successor, and with this decision all but abdicated. Shortly thereafter, in January 98, Nerva died of natural causes. Trajan, who was in Cologne, accepted the empire, and stayed north of the Alps for some time. Cassius Dio writes He sent for Aelianus and the praetorians who had mutinied against Nerva, pretending that he was going to employ them for some purpose, and then put them out of the way. In the Spring of 89, motivated by a personal grudge against the Emperor, he led a rebellion known as the Revolt of Saturninus , involving the legions Legio XIV Gemina and Legio XXI Rapax , camped in Moguntiacum Mainz . His Germanic allies were prevented from joining him by a sudden thaw of the river Rhine , and the revolt was quickly put down by Domitian s general Trajan , who afterwards burned Saturninus letters in an attempt to avoid implicating others. However, Domitian had numerous others executed with Saturninus, displaying their heads on the rostra at Rome.
