  1. Dome Petroleum

No footnotes date June 2010 Dome Petroleum Limited was a Calgary based petroleum producer and one of few Canadian owned companies in the Alberta oilfields. John Gallagher geologist Jack Gallager joined a group of investors in Dome Exploration Western Ltd. in 1950 and built it into the major Canadian oil company Dome Petroleum Limited to which it was renamed in 1958 . Gallagher was the sole employee for the first two years. However, James McCrea ref name The Mining Hall of Fame cite web url http www.halloffame.mining.ca halloffame english bios mccrea.html title Mining Hall of Fame accessdate 17 June 2010 Dead link date October 2010 bot H3llBot ref , who was instrumental in building Dome Mines into one of the giants of the Canadian mining industry, is credited with originally creating Dome Exploration Western Ltd. Charles Dunkley was Dome s third employee and became Dome s Senior Vice President and Jack s management partner. Charlie had a reserved management style and the pair worked well together especially in the early days when they ran a tight management ship. Dome grew by making acquisitions in the energy industry, notably the 1981 acquisition of a 52.9 interest of Hudson s Bay Oil and Gas Company Limited through its wholly owned subsidiary, Dome Energy Limited. Dome was active mainly in Western Canada, the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic islands. The company developed serious problems as a result of the 1986 drop in world oil prices and substantial debts from past takeovers. In November 1987, after months of negotiation, an agreement in principle was reached that lead to Amoco Canada Petroleum Co Ltd buying Dome for 5.5 billion. This purchase was completed 1 September 1988. ref name The Canadian Encyclopedia cite web url http www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com index.cfm?PgNm TCE&Params A1ARTA0002341 title Dome Petroleum Limited publisher The Canadian Encyclopedia accessdate ... include Petro Canada and Suncor . 1. Petroleum reservoir

A petroleum reservoir , or oil and gas reservoir , is a subsurface pool of hydrocarbon s contained in Porosity porous or fractured rock formation s. The naturally occurring hydrocarbons, such as crude oil or natural gas , are trapped by overlying rock formations with lower Permeability earth sciences permeability . Reservoirs are found using hydrocarbon exploration methods. Formation Crude oil found in oil reservoirs formed in the Earth s Crust geology crust from the remains of living things. Crude oil is properly known as petroleum, and is used as fossil fuel. Evidence indicates that millions of years of heat and pressure changed the remains of microscopic plant and animal remains into oil and natural gas . Roy Nurmi, an interpretation adviser for Schlumberger , described the process as follows Plankton and algae, proteins and the life that s floating in the sea, as it dies, falls to the bottom, and these organisms are going to be the source of our oil and gas. When they re buried with the accumulating sediment and reach an adequate temperature, something above 50 to 70 C they start to cook. This transformation, this change, changes them into the liquid hydrocarbons that move and migrate, will become our oil and gas reservoir. ref name quote cite web title The Making of Oil Birth of a Reservoir work Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development url http www.seed.slb.com en ... in the last step of the reservoir formation process have been classified by petroleum geologist s into two ... are formed by a deformation in the rock layer that contains the hydrocarbons. 1. Petroleum geologist

A petroleum geologist is an occupation that involves all aspects of Hydrocarbon exploration oil discovery and production in the field of petroleum geology . Petroleum geologists are usually linked to the actual discovery of oil and the identification of possible Oil field oil deposits or leads. It can be a very labor intensive task involving several different fields of science and elaborate machinery. Petroleum geologists look at the structural and sedimentary aspects of the stratum strata to identify possible oil traps. Profile Petroleum geologists make the decision on where the location of drilling will occur. This is done by locating prospects within a sedimentary basin. Petroleum geologists determine a prospect s viability looking at seven main aspects, according to the orthodox view of petroleum exploration Source The presence of an organic rich source rock capable of generating hydrocarbon s during deep burial. Reservoir The porous rock unit that collects the hydrocarbons expelled from the source rock and holds them inside a trap. Seal The rock unit that inhibits the oil or gas from escaping vertically out of a hydrocarbon bearing reservoir rock . Trap Structural or stratigraphic feature that captures migrating hydrocarbons into an economically producible accumulation. Timing Geologic events must occur in a certain order e.g. that the trap formed before migration rather than after. Maturation The process of thermal maturing of a source rock, leading to the cracking of its organic matter into oil and gas. Migration The movement of the less dense oil or gas from the source rock into a reservoir rock and then into a trap. These seven key aspects allow the Petroleum geologist to obtain a 1 dimensional idea of the subsurface. 1. Petroleum geochemistry

Petroleum geochemistry is the application of chemical principles to the study of the origin, migration, accumulation, and alteration of petroleum... John M. Hunt, 1979 . ref Hunt, J.M., 1979. Petroleum Geochemistry and Geology . Freeman, San Francisco ISBN 0716710056 ref Petroleum is generally considered oil and natural gas es having various compounds composed of primarily hydrogen and carbon. They are usually generated from the decomposition and or thermal maturation of organic matter . The organic matter originated from plant s and algae . The organic matter is deposited after the death of the plant in sediments , where after considerable time, heat, and pressure the compounds in the plants and algae are altered to oil, gas, and kerogen . Kerogen can be thought of as the remaining solid material of the plant. The sediment usually clay and or calcareous lime ooze, Lithification hardens during this Diagenesis alteration process into Rock geology rock ie. shale and or limestone . The shale or limestone rock containing the organic matter is called the source rock because it is the source, having generated the petroleum. In our quest to find more oil and gas, we use numerous petroleum Geochemistry geochemical techniques to 1 identify source rocks and determine the amount, type, and maturation level of the organic matter 2 evaluate the potential timing of petroleum migration from the source rock 3 assess the potential migration pathways and 4 correlate petroleum compounds found in reservoirs, leaks, and surface seeps to find new pools of petroleum. Some of the petroleum geochemical techniques used are stable isotope s hydrocarbon analysis fingerprinting of specific organic compounds biological organic markers with gas chromatography GC and gas chromatography mass spectrometry GC MS maturity indicators like vitrinite reflectance laboratory pyrolysis and analysis kerogen typing and other more exotic techniques.
