On the Dnieper , Op. 51, also known by its French language title Sur le Borysthenes Borysth ne lang ru , is the fourth ballet written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1930. Background Sergei Diaghilev , the impresario who had led Ballets Russes to distinguished success, died suddenly in 1929, hence ending Prokofiev s collaboration with the troupe. The Prodigal Son Prokofiev The Prodigal Son was the last such collaboration . Seeing the success of the work, the Ballet de l Op ra National de Paris Paris Op ra commissioned Prokofiev to write another ballet. Serge Lifar , formerly a close associate with Diaghilev, was responsible for creating the setting and choreography. However, he did not place any significance to the scenario. Rather, the ballet was created as a sequence of dances. On the Dnieper was the result of this collaboration. Lifar, in his 1965 book La danse , said that he was disappointed with Prokofiev s score. Lifar claimed to have been inspired by Russian folkdance but acknowledges that critics found his own choreography insufficiently Russian. Preparations for the ballet were marked the sudden withdrawal of Olga Spessivtseva who was to have had the leading female role. Spessivsteva had had a series of successes with Lifar at the Ballet de l Op ra National de Paris Paris Opera Ballet Promethee , Giselle and had unrequited feelings for him. Burial was sometimes individual, but larger groupings are more common, with burials being done sequentially in the same grave. There are parallels with the contemporaneous Samara culture , and a larger horizon from the lower half of Dnieper to the mid to lower Volga has been drawn, particularly by the advocates of the Kurgan hypothesis as expounded by Marija Gimbutas . Dmitry Telegin ru , ru assigns them to a broad cultural region that spanned the Vistula in Poland southeast to the Dnieper. Mallory includes this area within the limits of the Proto Indo Europeans. Bronze Age The Middle Dnieper culture is an eastern extension of the Corded Ware culture , ca. 3200&mdash 2300 BC of northern Ukraine and Belarus. As the name indicates, it was centered on the middle reach of the DnieperRiver and is contemporaneous with the latter phase and then a successor to the Indo European languages Indo European Yamna culture , as well as to the latter phase of the Tripolye culture . Geographically it is directly behind the area occupied by the Globular Amphora culture south and east , and while commencing a little later and lasting a little longer, it is otherwise contemporaneous with it. More than 200 sites are attested to, mostly as barrow inhumation s under tumuli some of these burials are secondary depositions into Yamna era kurgans . Grave goods included pottery and stone battle axes. There is some evidence of cremation in the northerly area. Settlements seem difficult to define the economy was much like that of the Yamna and Corded Ware cultures, semi to fully nomadic pastoralism. ref J. P. It has been argued that the area where the Middle Dnieper culture is situated would have provided a better migration route for steppe tribes along the Pripyat River Pripyat tributary of the Dnieper and perhaps provided the cultural bridge between Yamna and Corded Ware cultures.
