It covers an area of convert 188 acre km2 and can be found at map reference TQ337181. The common is very popular with walkers and particularly dog walkers, partially due to its proximity to the southeastern outskirts of Burgess Hill. There is a sizeable car park, although this becomes difficult to use in poor weather. The country park trail is a mile long 0.5  km and passes through oak trees, grassland and an area of scrub. There are some willow trees in the scrubland, a lake and a stream. Birdlife in the park includes stonechat s, linnet s, woodpecker s, chiffchaff s, blackcap s and tit s. Visible at the northern end of the common is Jacob s Post . The post marks the spot where the body of an itinerent peddlar, Jacob Harris, was displayed after he was hanged in 1734 for the murder of Richard Miles. In wet weather stout footwear is recommended as the Weald Clay Weald clay in the area gets very waterlogged. The lake is well used by local fishermen who fish for carp , perch and Rutilus roach . To fish here, an Environment Agency rod licence and a permit is needed. Notability date December 2009 unreferenced date July 2010 Herbert Joseph Cribb was born in Hammersmith, London, in 1892, and became Eric Gill s assistant at the age of 14. The following year he started an official five year apprenticeship with Gill. He became a well known sculptor in his own right, after Gill left Ditchling for Wales in 1924. Cribb is best known for his many church sculptures in south east England, including carving the 14 Stations of the Cross at St Matthew s, Westminster . When Eric Gill moved to Ditchling in 1907, Cribb went with him as his apprentice. Later they worked together at The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic on Ditchling Common . When Gill left the Guild in 1924, Cribb took over the stone carver s workshop and continued working there until his death. Cribb s brother Lawrence went with Gill to Wales and then to Buckinghamshire as his primary assistant. Cribb and Gill continued to work together, for example on the monumental sculpture Mankind that is now in the Tate . Cribb was a sculptor of Commonwealth War Graves Commission Commonwealth war graves , which Gill s brother Max Gill had drawn up, prior to their being copied by French artists and machines, making over 50 originals for the many regimental badges represented. Alfred Darling 1862 1931 began to manufacture film equipment at his engineering works at 25 Ditchling Rise, Brighton after carrying out repairs for Esm Collings . His clients included George Albert Smith film pioneer George Albert Smith and James Williamson film pioneer James Williamson . In 1897 he took out a patent, jointly with Alfred Wrench, for a camera with a variable shutter and a claw pull down mechanism. In 1899, on a commission from Charles Urban , he produced the Biokam, a film making system for amateurs using 17.5mm film. His 35mm film equipment was widely used during the early years of cinema development. Hollingdean is a part of the city of Brighton & Hove . Hollingdean is in effect the older part of Hollingbury south of the park. It is bounded by Ditchling Road to the west, the Round Hill, Brighton Round Hill area to the south, and Lewes Road and Moulsecoomb to the east. A mainly residential area, mostly a Council house council estate , with late 19th and early 20th century terraced houses towards the Fiveways, and some railway land, light industry, and warehousing. The only public building of historic interest in Hollingdean is small Jewish Cemetery. The site of Brighton s old abattoir slaughterhouse is now being used for light industry and a controversial waste disposal facility.
