Joydeep Sircar born 1947 is a mountain traveller and pioneer mountain historian. In 1979 he published his Himalayan handbook , an index of all the then named peaks of 6096 meters 20000  feet and above in Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent giving chronological entries of expeditions up to 1975 to each peak with a brief summary of results and references to expedition reports, after a decade of solitary research. He was inspired in this formidable undertaking by the pronouncement of the late Soli S. Mehta , Hony. Local Secretary of The Himalayan Club, that the task had never been attempted before and was well nigh impossible. This book, introduced by the famous British mountaineer explorer J. O. M. Roberts , one of Sircar s idols, was the first one of its kind. The Pala dynasty of Kamarupa ruled the kingdom from 900 CE to 1100 CE. Like the Pala dynasty of Bengal , the first ruler in this dynasty was elected, which probably explains the name of this dynasty Pala . But unlike the Palas of Bengal, who were Buddhist s, the Palas of Kamarupa were Vaishnava . The dynasty drew their lineage from the earlier Varman dynasty and thus ultimately from Narakasura . The Pala dynasty came to an end when Kamarupa was invaded by the Gaur king Ramapala c 1072 1126 . Timgyadeva was made the governor of Kamarupa who ruled between 1110 to 1126 . Timgyadeva threw off the yoke of the Pala king and ruled independently for some years when he was attacked and replaced by Vaidyadeva under Ramapala s son Kumarapala . Vaidyadeva, who ruled between 1126 and 1140 , declared independence within four years of his rule after the death of Kumarapala. Both Timgyadeva and Vaidyadeva issued grants in the style of the Kamarupa kings three copper plates attached to the seal of the Kamarupa kings by a ring . Vinayaditya 680 696 CE followed his father, Vikramaditya I on to the Chalukya throne. His reign was marked by general peace and harmony. He earned the titles Yuddhamalla , Sahasarasika , Satyashraya . Northern expedition Inscriptions speak of many victories to Vinyaditya. He had fought alongside his father against the Pallavas. According to the Jejuri record of 684, he defeated the Pallavas , Kalabhras , Keralas and the Kalachuri of central India. from the Kolhapur plates of 678 he defeated the kingdoms of Lanka and Kamera which according to Dr. S. Nagaraju was Khmer or Cambodia. The Vakkaleri plates confirm the Chalukya levying tribute on Kamera, Lanka and Parasika Persia . According to Dr. Sircar, it is very possible that the chiefs of Lanka and Persia may have sought protection from the Chalukya, considering the unstable political situation in those countries. During this time, Persia was under Islamic invasion. Vinayaditya sent an expedition to the north under the command of his son Vijayaditya . According to some accounts, Vijayaditya was captured and held prisoner and after a period of incarceration, escaped and returned to the Chalukyan kingdom to be crowned the monarch of the empire. We do not have any further information on this expedition. Vinayaditya sent an ambassador to the Chinese court in 692. Vijayaditya succeeded his father in 696.
