  1. Dinah Morris

Dinah Morris is a major character in George Eliot s novel Adam Bede 1859 a Methodist lay preacher, she was modelled on Eliot s aunt Elizabeth Evans. Dinah visits the fictional community of Hayslope a rural, pastoral and close knit community in 1799. She says to Lisbeth Bede in Chapter Ten, I work in the cotton mill when I am at home. ref Eliot 100. ref She lives thirty miles away in the fictional Snowfield, in the fictional Stonyshire County. Description She is a cousin by marriage of Hetty Sorrel , and related to the Poysers. Rachel Poyser is her aunt, and wishes Dinah would stayed with them in Hayslope. Dinah is deeply religious, and a follower of Wesleyan Methodism. She lives to comfort others, including Adam Bede s mother when her husband is drowned. She offers to help Hetty if she is ever in need. When Hetty commits her crime and cannot own up to it, Dinah s presence allows Hetty to face what she has done and ask for forgiveness. At the beginning of the novel, she lives at the Poyser Farm because she is Mrs. Poyser s niece. Despite the fact that she is an attractive woman, she seems to show no signs of self consciousness while she preaches. In fact, she is sometimes considered to be Eliot s most confident female character. According to Diana Neill, The plot of Adam Bede is founded on a story told to George Eliot by her aunt Elizabeth Evans, a preacher, and the original of Dinah Morris of the novel, of a confession of child murder, made to her by a girl in prison. ref Neill 208. ref Dinah s preaching is extremely effective, and persuades the extremely vain Bess to take off her gaudy earrings, although only for a short while. Her resistance to marriage because she is worried that it will curtail her religious teaching, is resolved by Eliot in a manner calculated not to upset the male hierarchy. ref Martin 745. ref It turns out that Dinah was not in fact prevented from ..., Dinah Category George Eliot characters Morris, Dinah ...   more details

She began her theatrical career in the chorus of Israel Grodner s London troupe in the mid 1880s, eventually getting small parts, and joining Adler s troupe when the Grodners went to Paris . Adler, then a widower, quickly took a liking to her. At this time, he was already involved with Jenny Jennya Kaiser, whom he had become romantically involved with while his first wife, Sonya Adler Sonya , was still alive, and by whom he had had a son. Dinah Shtettin s father approved neither of theater nor of Adler, but did little to restrict his daughter s wishes. He stated, Let it be a divorce tomorrow, but marriage it must be They were married in 1887, and he left with the troupe to travel to the United States . After a seven month return to London, he once again journeyed to New York in 1889, and was shortly followed by Dinah, who divorced her husband when he eloped with Sara Heine two years later in 1891. Her New York City New York debut was in the role of Fanya, the villain s daughter, in Jacob Gordin s Siberia Gordin play Siberia 1892 . Commercially unsuccessful at the time, this first play of Gordin s is now considered a landmark in the evolution of Yiddish Theater. 1. Dinah, Dinah Show us your Leg

orphan date February 2010 No footnotes date April 2009 Dinah, Dinah Show us your Leg is an American bawdy song. The formula is a descending scale Rich girl does something, Poor girl does something else , my girl don t do whatever the other two do, usually with comic effect. . The twentieth century versions are possibly the result of merging a minstrel song with Coming Round the Mountain . In Negro Singers Own Book c 1846 there is a song about animals Mr. Coon he is a mighty man, He carries a bushy tail, He steals old massa s corn at night, And husks it on a rail. De mink he is a mighty thing, He rambles in de dark The only ting disturbs his peace Is my old bull dog s bark. By 1915 this had become a comment on the fashion tastes of white women Well a white lady wears a hobble skirt, A yaller gal tries to do the same, But a poor black gal wears a Mary Jane, But she s hobbling just the same. Well a white lady sleeps in a feather bed, A yaller gal tries to do the same, But a poor black gal makes a pallet on de floor, But she s sleeping just the same. Notably lacking in those songs, is a chorus. Another song, Charmin Bestsy , noted in 1908, is clearly related to Coming Round The Mountain I m comin round the mountain, Charmin Betsy, I m comin round the mountain, fore I leave, An if I never more see you, Take this ring, an think of me. An wear this ring I give you, An wear it on your right han , An when I m dead an forgotten, Don t give it to no other man.
