  1. Raster interrupt

Unreferenced date February 2008 A raster interrupt is a computer interrupt signal that is used for display timing purposes. It is usually, though not always, generated by the system s Graphics processing unit graphics chip . Often, the graphics chips used in home computer s and video game console s during the 8 bit era were somewhat limited in their capabilities. For instance, the MOS Technology VIC II chip used in the Commodore 64 could only handle eight Sprite computer graphics sprites simultaneously. Raster interrupts were sometimes incorporated into these video chips in order to allow skilled programmers to transcend these limitations. An interrupt would be set to trigger when a given screen line was refreshed, and the interrupt routine could then reload the chip s registers. In doing so, multiple graphics modes could be mixed on one screen, the number of sprites could be greatly multiplied, and a portion of the screen could be Scrolling scrolled while another part remained stationary. Most, though not all, popular graphics chips of the 8 bit era supported raster interrupts in some form. The C64 s VIC II had a powerful and flexible raster interrupt system, which was used extensively by the demoscene . The ANTIC chip used by the Atari 8 bit family included display list interrupts , which performed much the same function. Some systems did not include native support for raster interrupts, and had to compensate in other ways. The Nintendo Entertainment System s Picture processing unit PPU graphics chip did not support true raster interrupts an interrupt could be set to trigger during the vertical blank interval, but not at any arbitrary scan line and instead required polling of a hit flag that indicated when the first sprite was being drawn. Although early games like Super Mario Bros. , Castlevania , and The Legend of Zelda video game The Legend of Zelda managed to produce ... track of the PPU s address and data lines and generated raster interrupts. 1. Raster passes

Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Raster passes are the most basic of all Computer aided manufacturing Machining process machining strategies for the finishing or semi finishing of a part during computer aided manufacturing CAM . In raster passes machining the milling cutter moves along curves on the cutter location surface CL surface obtained by intersecting the CL surface with vertical, parallel planes. Many CAM systems implement this strategy by sampling points on these curves by calculating intersection points of the CL surface and as many vertical lines as needed to approximate the curve to the desired accuracy. There has never been a standardization of terminology used in the industry for the different machining strategies, so it is known by many different names, often with poor illustrations in the brochure because it s so basic, users are supposed to know already what it is. 1. Raster Blaster

Image Rasterblaster.png thumb Raster Blaster is a pioneering home computer pinball simulation game that paved the way for more elaborate and accurate pinball sims in the years that followed. Raster Blaster is a 1981 in video gaming 1981 computer game computer pinball game for the Apple II family Apple II resembling the classic Firepower pinball Firepower table. It was game programming written and game design designed by Bill Budge and published by BudgeCo . The game showed a fullscreen high resolution display of a pinball game table. The MOS Technology 6502 6502 based Apple II was not designed to support fast graphics and collision detection , but Budge mastered these problems and the game ran with such speed and visual accuracy that it stood head and shoulders above other arcade game arcade style games of its day. Raster Blaster was one of the major hits of the plastic baggies on pegboards era of computer game stores, and Budge followed it with the seminal Pinball Construction Set 1982 in video gaming 1982 . Even as the second game took off in sales, Budge and his sister were being overwhelmed by all the tasks involved in running the business. It took all of Budge s energy to just keep things going, let alone write games. Electronic Arts EA was formed that same year, and founder Trip Hawkins was impressed by Budge s titles. He approached Budge with the help of Apple Computer co founder Steve Wozniak and invited him to join the initial group of EA developers, and leave the manufacturing, marketing, sales and distribution issues behind. Budge agreed, and became the central figure among EA s highly publicized designers. Pinball Construction Set became a mainstream hit, and the top title in EA s original line up. Usually an image viewer is preferred over a raster graphics editor for viewing images. Some editors specialize in the editing of photograph s such as the popular Adobe Photoshop , while others are more geared to artist created illustrations, like the Adobe Fireworks . Vector editors vs raster graphics editors Vector editors are often contrasted with raster graphics editors, and their capabilities complement each other. Vector editors are better for graphic design , page layout , typography , logo s, sharp edged artistic illustration s e.g. cartoons, clip art, complex geometric patterns , technical illustration s, diagram ming and flow chart flowcharting . Raster editors are more suitable for retouching, photo processing, Rendering computer graphics photo realistic illustrations, collage, and hand drawn illustrations using a pen tablet. Unreferenced date April 2008 Image RIP Data Flow.svg thumb 300px Generating the raster image data A raster image processor RIP is a component used in a printing system which produces a raster graphics raster image also known as a bitmap . The bitmap is then sent to a printing device for output. The input may be a page description in a high level page description language such as PostScript , Portable Document Format , XML Paper Specification XPS or another bitmap of higher or lower resolution than the output device. In the latter case, the RIP applies either smoothing or interpolation algorithms to the input bitmap to generate the output bitmap. Raster image processing is the process and the means of turning vector geometry vector digital information such as a PostScript file into a high resolution raster image . 1. Raster Document Object

The .RDO Raster Document Object file format is the native and foreign format native format used by Xerox s DocuTech range of hardware and software, that underpins the company s Xerox Document On Demand XDOD systems. It is therefore a significant file format for the print on demand market sector, along with Postscript and Portable Document Format PDF . RDO is a metafile format based on the Open Document Architecture ODA specifications In Xerox s RDO implementation, description and control information is stored within the RDO file, while raster image s are stored separately, usually in a separate folder, as Tagged Image File Format TIFF files. The RDO file dictates which bitmap images will be used on each page of a document, and where they will be placed. Features and disadvantages This approach has advantages and disadvantages over the monolithic approach used by PDF The disadvantages of RDO are that it is a largely proprietary format, and the multi file approach means that file management and orphan control is more of an issue one cannot tell from a computer s file system whether all the files required for a document to print are present and correct. In RDO s favour, the multi file approach allows a networked device to load the small RDO file and then request the larger bitmap files only when necessary This allows a full job specification to be loaded and installed over a network almost immediately, with the larger bitmap files only having to be transferred as and when needed, allowing more fexibility for managing network traffic loading. The TIFF file format is highly portable, and Xerox s MakeReady software, supplied with its XDOD systems, readily imports and export postscript files however, the Xerox on demand systems typically require a document library to be stored ... imls CLIRImageStudy.pdf Oya Y. 1. Graphic organizer

Unreferenced date November 2009 Graphic organizers are visual representations of knowledge, concepts, thoughts, or ideas. Graphic Organizers historically have been organized bits of data in easy to understand formats, such as charts, tables, and graphs. In the twentieth century, due to developing technologies in printing, the use of graphic organizers grew substantially. Additionally, graphic organizers entered the realm of education in the late twentieth century as ways of helping students to organize their thoughts as a sort of pre writing exercise . For example, a student is asked, What were the causes of the French Revolution? The student places the question in the middle of a sheet of paper. Branching off of this, the student jots down her ideas, such as poor harvests, unfairness of the Old Regime, etc. Branching off of these are more of the student s thoughts, such as the nobles paid no taxes branching from unfairness of the Old Regime. This concept map thus graphically organizes the student s ideas and knowledge, while serving as the basis of the student s essay answer.
