  1. Predictive informatics

Predictive informatics PI is the combination of predictive modeling and Informatics academic field informatics applied to healthcare, pharmaceutical, life sciences and business industries. Predictive informatics enables researchers, analysts, physicians and decision makers to aggregate and analyze disparate types of data, recognize patterns and trends within that data, and make more informed decisions in an effort to preemptively alter future outcomes. Current uses of PI Healthcare Over the past decade the increased usage of electronic health records has produced vast amounts of clinical data that is now computable. Predictive informatics integrates this data with other datasets e.g., genotypic, phenotypic in centralized and standardized data repositories upon which predictive analytics may be conducted. Pharmaceuticals The biopharmaceutical industry uses predictive informatics a superset of chemoinformatics to integrate information resources to transform data into knowledge in order to make better decisions faster in the area of drug lead identification and optimization. Systems biology Scientists involved in systems biology employ predictive informatics to integrate complex data about the interactions in biological systems from diverse experimental sources. Other uses Predictive informatics and analytics are also used in financial services, insurance, telecommunications, retail, and travel industries. Legal informatics is an area within information science . One of the best definitions of legal informatics comes from Erdelez and O Hare 1997 The American Library Association defines Informatics academic field informatics as the study of the structure and properties of information , as well as the application of technology to the Categorization organization , archive storage , information retrieval retrieval , and dissemination of information. Legal informatics therefore, pertains to the application of informatics within the context of the legal environment and as such involves law related organization s e.g., law offices, court s, and law school s and User computing user s of information and information technology information technologies within these organizations. Legal informatics could be said then, to encompass several conceptual areas information retrieval both manual and automated systems such as artificial intelligence and law law and Public policy policy issues such as privacy , copyright , and security information access issues such as making legal and government information more accessible to the public, both physically and intellectually and practice issues applications which help lawyer s in their day to day operations . Computational informatics, as a subfield of informatics, studies information using computational methodologies. Computational informatics can also be interpreted as the use of computational methods in the information sciences. Development From a historical viewpoint, medical informatics scientists also known as medical informaticians started to use artificial intelligence and Baysian statistical methods in diagnosis and medical decision making, as early as in the 1970s. An example is the MYCIN system developed at Stanford University . The field has since evolved to use a wide range of computational methods and to interact with all possible scientific and other disciplinary domains. 1. Development informatics

Development informatics is a field of both research and practice focusing on the application of information systems in socio economic development. The informatics terminology is intended to be a translation of the French informatique . It indicates a broad and systemic view that encompasses four inter linked levels Data, information and knowledge Information and communication technologies Processes of learning, decision making and communication Wider human, organisational and national context The terminology is therefore intended to indicate a broader approach than that taken by the more techno centric definitions of either Information and Communication Technologies for Development ICT4D , which focuses on use of ICTs for delivery of specific development goals, or Information and Communication Technologies and Development ICTD , which looks at use of ICTs in developing countries. However, it is unclear whether these differences are understood or used in practice. ref cite web url http chriscoward.wordpress.com 2009 03 11 ict4d ictd or what first Chris last Coward title ICT4D, ICTD, or what? date 11 March 2009 accessdate 2009 08 05 ref The main network for those active in development informatics is the International Development Informatics Association, ref cite web url http www.developmentinformatics.org title International Development Informatics Association accessdate 2009 08 05 ref which organises conferences and publications in the field. The building has been designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of excellent , and was constructed by Balfour Beatty . History One of the major recommendations of the 1997 international review that led to the formation of Informatics academic field Informatics as an academic grouping at Edinburgh, was that the University should provide a building for the collocation of Informatics. An options appraisal recommended that the University should plan for the collocation of Informatics in an 18,000 m new construction within the University s George Square Campus, using the long vacant Crichton Street site. In 2002, the University embarked on a fund raising campaign. This was followed closely by the Edinburgh Cowgate fire Edinburgh Cowgate Fire of December 2002, which destroyed a number of buildings, including some 3,000 m 30,000 sq ft. of the School s accommodation at 80 South Bridge. The School took over four floors of the Appleton Tower as emergency accommodation. Unreferenced date August 2007 Expert subject culture date August 2008 Humanistic informatics also known as Humanities informatics is one of several names chosen for the study of the relationship between human culture and technology . The term is fairly common in Europe , but is little known in the English speaking world , though Digital Humanities also known as Humanities computing is in many cases roughly equivalent. Humanistic informatics departments were generally started in the 1990s when universities rarely taught humanities based approaches to the rapidly developing computerized society. For this reason, the field was quite broadly defined, and included courses in humanities computing, basic introductions to how computers work, historical developments of technology, technology and learning, digital art and literature and digital culture. Today several departments have declared more specialized areas of research, such as digital arts and culture at the University of Bergen , and socio cultural communication with and without technology at the University of Aalborg . orphan date November 2009 Materials informatics is a field of study that applies the principles of informatics academic field informatics to materials science and engineering to better understand the use, material selection selection , development, and discovery of material s. This is an emerging field, with a goal to achieve high speed and robust acquisition, management, analysis, and dissemination of diverse materials data. This field of endeavor is not limited to some traditional understandings of the relationship between materials and information. Some more narrow interpretations include combinatorial chemistry , Process Modeling , materials property databases, materials data management and product life cycle management . Materials informatics is at the convergence of these concepts, but also transcends them and has the potential to achieve greater insights and deeper understanding by applying lessons learned from data gathered on one type of material to others. By gathering appropriate meta data, the value of each individual data point can be greatly expanded. Beyond computational methods? 1. Wireless Informatics

Orphan date February 2009 Wireless Informatics describes the evolution of traditional customer support practices within the mobile industry from problem management to problem prevention. Wireless Informatics methodologies are being adopted by mobile operators, device manufacturers and service providers as a means of overcoming the negative impact of service and technology complexity on both operating costs and customer brand loyalty. Because added complexity across mobile technologies coupled with a rise in market competition makes managing the mobile user experience through traditional support channels an increasingly complex and potentially costly business, Wireless Informatics supports the notion of using collating, validating and disseminating knowledge, best practices and experiences throughout the mobile value chain as a means of mitigating end user support requirements. For example, trends analysis made within an existing customer care center can be applied upstream , perhaps within the organisation s product management or retail division to eliminate a troublesome component, service etc before the problem erupts and drives a costly spike in support calls. Wireless Informatics is supported and promoted as an industry best practice by the Wireless Informatics Forum run by WDSGlobal , a non profit organisation dedicated to linking all parties in the mobile landscape and aiding the cross sharing of knowledge and best practice.
