Norman Levy Park and Preserve is a man made park on the South Shore of Long Island in Merrick, New York . The park is situated on a hill and has excellent views of the Manhattan skyline and Long Island. Norman Levy Park and Preserve was once a landfill but was transformed to a park space in 2000. The park is named after Norman Levy, who was a New York state senator and a champion for the environment. The park is the highest point on Long Island s South Shore, and has an average altitude of around 120 feet. The park has many groomed trails which take visitors to the top of the hill. Along the trails, there are many exercise stations for the more active visitors. For a more leisurely visit, one can take a tour around the park with one of the park rangers. This tour includes trip to the pier which extends into the bay, a view of Long Island s horizon, and a clear view of Manhattan Island. Other amenities include fishing, bird spotting, and hiking. Citizens to Preserve Overton Park CPOP is a nonprofit advocacy group founded in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1957. CPOP is best known for its success at preventing the extension of Interstate 40 through Overton Park adjacent to the Memphis Zoo , through the landmark 1971 Supreme Court case Citizens to Preserve Overton Park v. High Mountain ParkPreserve is a protected area of the Preakness Range of the Watchung Mountains in Wayne, New Jersey , United States. Established in 1993, it comprises convert 1153 acre km2 0 of woodlands and wetlands owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy . It is one of the largest tracts of conserved land in northern New Jersey. It serves to protect nine ecological communities harboring 380 plant species, 18 of which are rare. Some of the globally imperiled plants found in the area include Torrey s mountain mint Pycnanthemum torrei and basil leaved mountain mint Pycnanthemum clinopodioides , which, along with narrow leaved vervain Verbena simplex , are also classified as endangered by the state. Hazel dodder Cuscuta coryli , declared imperiled by the state, has been recorded as well. The preserve contains geological points of interest, including a rare Basalt traprock basalt glade and rock shelters which have been determined to be sites of prehistoric human habitation. During the American Revolution , high points along the ridge were used as signaling posts. Hiking trails are maintained by the New York New Jersey Trail Conference . Blue Heron ParkPreserve is a nature refuge on Staten Island , New York which has various natural areas including meadows, kettle pond s, freshwater streams and marshes, and woodlands. The park, maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation was acquired by the city in several parcels between 1974 and 2001, with the official dedication taking place on October 22, 1996. The extensive wetlands in the park are part of the Blue Belt an area of Staten Island which utilizes existing and improved undeveloped areas for stormwater drainage. There are six ponds located within the park including the convert 1.75 acre m2 adj on Spring Pond and the convert 1.4 acre m2 adj on Blue Heron Pond The park provides habitat to various species of birds including the Blue heron Ardea herodias for which it was named as well as various species of mammals such as bats, raccoons, grey squirrels and chipmunks.
