Note the inscription for George V reads GEORGIVS VDEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP while George VI reads GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX F D IND IMP. Dei Gratia Regina often abbreviated to D. G. Regina and seen as D G REGINA is Latin for By the Grace of God, Queen . This phrase appears on the obverse of all Canadian coins to the right of the portrait of Elizabeth II Queen Elizabeth II . This is not to be confused with D. G. REG. F. D. standing for Dei gratia regina fidei defensor which appears on the back of British pound British coins . Exceptions include a commemorative Canadian Dime Canadian coin 10 cent piece from 2001, and a series of Quarter Canadian coin 25 cent pieces commemorating the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, where the phrase is omitted from the coins obverse for space reasons. History Coins mint coin minted from 1902 until 1910 under Edward VII of the United Kingdom King Edward VII read D. G. Rex Imperator which is Latin for By the Grace of God, King and Emperor . The Dei Gra portion was removed temporarily from Canadian coinage in 1911 and led to such a public uproar over the godless coins, that it was returned to Canadian coinage in the subsequent year. From 1912 to 1936, under George V of the United Kingdom George V , it read Dei Gra Rex Et Ind Imp which stands for Dei Gratia Rex et Indiae Imperator which means By the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India . From 1937 to 1947 under the reign of George VI of the United Kingdom George VI , it read either Dei Gra Rex Et Ind Imp as before or was abbreviated D. G. Rex Et Ind Imp . From 1947 to 1952, still under George VI, after the condeferation of India, they read Dei Gratia Rex . From 1952 until 1964, it read Dei Gratia Regina under Queen Elizabeth II. The phrase is pron en ks re i . ref Oxford English Dictionary ref Examples of ex gratia payments Compensation payments are often made ex gratia when a government or organization is prepared to compensate victims of an event such as an accident or similar, but not to admit liability to pay compensation, or for causing the event. A company conducting layoff s may make an ex gratia payment to the affected employees that is greater than the statutory payment required by the law, perhaps if those employees had a long and well performing service with the company. italictitle Grace in Christianity Sola gratia is one of the five solas propounded to summarise the Reformers basic beliefs during the Protestant Reformation it is a Latin term meaning divine grace grace alone . Protestant reformers believed that this emphasis was in contradistinction to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church , though the Catholic Church had explicitly affirmed the doctrine of sola gratia in the year 529 in the Council of Orange , which condemned the Pelagian Pelagianism heresy. ref White, R. A., Sola Gratia, Solo Christo The Roman Catholic Doctrine of Justification, http www.bringyou.to apologetics a134.htm ref As a response to this misunderstanding, Catholic doctrine was further clarified in that Council of Trent the Council explained that salvation is made possible only by grace the faith and Good works works of men are secondary means that have their origins in and are sustained by grace. During the Reformation, Protestant leaders and Christian theology theologians generally believed the Roman Catholic view of the means of salvation to be a mixture of reliance upon the grace of God, and confidence in the merits of one s Good works own works performed in love , pejoratively called Legalism theology Legalism . The Reformers posited that salvation is entirely comprehended in God s gifts that is, God s act of free grace , dispensed by the Holy Spirit according to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ alone. Consequently, they argued that a sinner is not accepted by God on account of the change wrought in the believer by God s grace, and indeed, that the believer is accepted without any regard for the merit of his works for no one deserves salvation, a concept that some take to the extreme of Antinomianism . In early Christian inscriptions the title ancilla Dei Latin for handmaid of God is often given to a deceased woman. From the meaning attached to this term in the Middle Ages it has sometimes been assumed that the persons so qualified in the first age of Christianity were consecrated virgin s. The inscriptions containing this formula are of two classes one, in which it is merely stated that a given person was ancilla Dei the other, from which it is clear that this title was sometimes given to persons who certainly were not religious. The former class is the more numerous, but one of the latter is quite explicit.
