Super KQ played various Spanish language musical forms at part of its format, including salsa music salsa and merengue music similar to its sister station in New York City , WSKQ now WSNR . In 1993, Super KQ s format moved to 97.9 FM now KLAX FM . 1540 AM became Mexican regional KXMG, Mega 1540. Later, this frequency became KMPC. The frequency now broadcast in Korean language Korean after several years with a sports radio format. KSKQ signed off on July 31, 1993 to be replaced with Regional Mexican KLAX FM La X, much to the consternation of its fans. Licensed to Flagstaff, Arizona Flagstaff , Charles J. Saunders put it on the air in 1950 in radio 1950 . History KCLS signed on the air in 1950 and was owned by Saunders Broadcasting. The call letters were based upon the name of the owner s daughter Cheryl Lynn Saunders. KCLS operated at 600 kHz with 5,000 watt s of power in the daytime and 500 watts directional at night. This made it the most powerful Amplitude modulation AM radio station in Northern Arizona. The KCLS studios were originally a quonset hut. Throughout most of its history, KCLS broadcast middle of the road or adult contemporary music. It was also an early communications link for members of the nearby Navajo people Navajo tribe, broadcasting in Navajo language Navajo for one hour a day from 5 to 6 in the morning until the mid 1970s. The station had a long tradition of local news, with several radio announcers moving on to news positions in larger markets and with networks. The station carried with the National Weather Service to have their meteorologists deliver the weather. KCLS was also well known for broadcasting Northern Arizona University sports and also the high school sports. Charles Saunders also owned stations KUPI and KQPI in Idaho Falls, Idaho at different times in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Saunders, who was known as C J the D J , served as mayor of Flagstaff from 1958 to 1960. KCLS sold in 1986 and went Dark broadcasting dark shortly thereafter. The station featured big band music Big Band music & Swing music from the original 78 rpm recordings. Among the notable disc jockey s over the years were Lyman Jay, Bob Stone, and Tom Murphy. The station was put on the air by former KTLA Channel 5 engineer Robert Burdette and his wife Gloria on September 25, 1963. Indeed, the station s call letters are derived from her full name, Gloria R. Burdette. In 1957 Burdette bought an FM station in West Covina and named it KBOB after himself. It was a sister station to KGRB. In 1994, after Burdette suffered a stroke and went into a coma, both stations were put into a conservatorship. Steve Ray who had worked at KCLU AM KCLU , KSCA KLIT , KMPC , and KRCI was brought in to manage the stations. He made KGRB an NBC affiliate, renaming it AM 90 NBC , and was in the process of acquiring the KNBC AM call letters when the conservators bowed to the demands of Burdette s daughter and sold KGRB to a Hispanic broadcast group. In 1995 KGRB began simulcasting KMQA the former KBOB .     Unreferenced date July 2007 KYCR was a religion oriented radio station. In the 1960s and 1970s, playing gospel music gospel and R&B music, prior to becoming full time religious. In the mid 1960s, the station was operated by Marvin Kosofsky , who hired Bob Smith a.k.a. Wolfman Jack , who relocated from Del Rio, Texas , to run the station. Also at KUXL at this time were Art Hoehn a.k.a. Fat Daddy Washington and former KDWB personality Ralph Hull a.k.a. Preacher Paul Anthony and The Nazz . It was this trio of broadcasters who took control of border blaster station XERB 1090, in Baja California , in 1965. They operated the Big X from Minneapolis initially, then relocated to Southern California in 1966. The call letters of KUXL changed to KYCR in 1988. Until 2007, the station was a time shifted version of WWTC, calling itself The Patriot II . The format was then changed to a general talk format with its own identity, simply known as AM 1570 The New Talk of the Twin Cities . In April 2007, KYCR removed conservative talk show host Don Imus from the lineup for racist statements made about the Rutgers University women s basketball team.
