Image Frankfurt ontruth.gif thumb 200px On Truth ISBN 0 307 26422 X is the 2006 follow up to Harry Frankfurt Harry Frankfurt s 1986 essay, On Bullshit . In On Truth , Frankfurt develops the argument that individuals should care about the truth, regardless of whether they intend to be truthful. While Frankfurt explicitly avoids a definition of truth beyond the idea of the commonsense concept of truth people commonly hold, i.e., that which corresponds to reality. Frankfurt s strategy is to show that the truth, whether an individual is to be truthful or not, is integral to nearly every endeavor, the final point of his argument being that it is a requirement for self knowledge and therefore all distinctions between ourselves and the world. Frankfurt concludes that the importance of truth, and thus the need to care about it, is incorrigible thereby. Category Philosophy essays Category 2006 books ... more details

T theory is a branch of discrete mathematics dealing with analysis of tree graph theory tree s and discrete metric spaces . General history As per Andreas Dress , T theory originated from a question raised by Manfred Eigen , a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry , in the late seventies. He was trying to fit twenty distinct transfer RNA t RNA molecule s of the Escherichia coli E. Coli bacterium into a tree. One of the most important concepts of T theory is the tight span of a metric space. If X is a metric space, the tight span T X of X is, up to isomorphism, the unique minimal injective metric space that contains X . John Isbell was the first to discover the tight span in 1964, which he called the injective envelope . Dress independently constructed the same construct, which he called the tight span. Application areas Phylogenetic analysis, which is used to create phylogenetic tree s. Online algorithm s k server problem k server problem Recent developments Bernd Sturmfels , Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of California, Berkeley Berkeley , and Josephine Yu classified six point metrics using T theory. In logic and mathematics , a truth value , sometimes called a logical value , is a value indicating the relation of a proposition to truth . In classical logic , with its intended semantics, the truth values are true and false that is, classical logic is a two valued logic . Intuitionistic logic lacks a complete set of truth values because its semantics, the Brouwer Heyting Kolmogorov interpretation , is specified in terms of provability conditions, and not directly in terms of the truth of formulae. Multi valued logic s such as fuzzy logic and relevance logic allow for more than two truth values, possibly containing some internal structure. Even non truth valuational logics can associate values with logical formulae, as is done in algebraic semantics . For example, the algebraic semantics of intuitionistic logic is given in terms of Heyting algebra s. Topos theory uses truth values in a special sense the truth values of a topos are the global element s of the subobject classifier . Having truth values in this sense does not make a logic truth valuational. Unreferenced date March 2007 In semantics , truth conditions are what obtain precisely when a sentence linguistics sentence is wikt true true . For example, It is snowing in Nebraska is true precisely when it is snowing in Nebraska. More formally, we can think of a truth condition as what makes for the truth of a sentence in an inductive definition of truth for details, see the semantic theory of truth . Understood this way, truth conditions are theoretical entities . To illustrate with an example suppose that, in a particular truththeory, the word Nixon reference refers to Richard M. Nixon , and is alive is associated with the set mathematics set of currently living things. Then one way of representing the truth condition of Nixon is alive is as the ordered pair Nixon, x x is alive . And we say that Nixon is alive is true if and only if the referent of Nixon belongs to the set associated with is alive , that is, if and only if Nixon is alive. In semantics , the truth condition of a sentence is almost universally considered to be distinct from its meaning linguistics meaning . The meaning of a sentence is conveyed if the truth conditions for the sentence are understood. Additionally, there are many sentences that are understood although their truth condition is uncertain. One popular argument for this view is that some sentences are necessarily true that is, they are true whatever happens to obtain. All such sentences have the same truth conditions, but arguably do not thereby have the same meaning. Likewise, the sets x x is alive and x x is alive and x is not a rock are identical they have precisely the same members but presumably the sentences Nixon is alive and Nixon is alive and is not a rock have different meanings.
