DefenseDiscoveryMetadataSpecification DDMS or DoD DiscoveryMetadataSpecification is a Net Centric Enterprise Services NCES metadata initiative . DDMS is loosely based on the Dublin Core vocabulary. DDMS defines discoverymetadata data element element s for Resource computer science resources posted to community and organization al shared spaces . It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as DoD DiscoveryMetadata Standard . The project focuses both on the process of developing a central taxonomy for metadata, and defining a way of discovering resources by their metadata using that taxonomy. The DDMS was created in support of the DoD Net Centric Data Strategy dated May 9, 2003 , and specifies a set of information fields that are to be used to describe any data or service asset that is made known to the DoD Enterprise. The elements in the DDMS are designed to be platform, language, and implementation independent, and the specification is described with an XML Schema . Structure The DDMS is designed using a layered approach, combining a Core Layer and an Extensible Layer surrounded by the DDMS Resource Header. The Core Layer is composed of four sets of element categories, each with a specific functional focus for describing a data asset The Security elements enable the description of security classification and related fields. The Resource elements enable the description of maintenance and administration information. The Summary Content elements enable the description of concepts and topics. The Format elements enable the description of physical attributes of the asset. The Extensible Layer is designed to support domain specific or Community of Interest COI discoverymetadata requirements, and can be used to extend the element categories identified in the Core Layer. Extensions are expected to be registered in the http metadata.ces.mil DoD Metadata Registry . Extensible ... Metadata Category United States Department of Defense ... more details

Primary sources date November 2009 Metadata is the name of a United States US corporation and a registered trademark in the United States. Though the term metadata has a common generic use in information technology , claims of trademark have since brought about legal threats against its use in the generic sense. History The word Metadata was registered in 1986 as a trademark U.S. Trademark Registration No. 1,409,206 belonging to The Metadata Company. Citation needed date August 2009 The trademark was granted incontestable status in 1991. Metadata is a proprietary mark which stands for The Metadata Company. The Metadata Company has since attempted to threaten people legally into not using the word metadata in the generic sense. Many people believe that due to the widespread use of the word metadata in the generic sense as data about data , it is likely that the Metadata trademark has genericised trademark entered the public domain by becoming a general term . This was the legal opinion expressed by the Office of the Solicitor of the United States Department of the Interior to the Federal Geographic Data Committee when the latter was threatened by Metadata s lawyers for its use of the word metadata in a generic sense. However, no judge has as yet ruled the trademark invalid. Multiple issues unreferenced December 2009 orphan December 2009 In metadata an indicator is a Boolean logic Boolean value that may contain only the values true or false . The definition of an Indicator must include the meaning of a true value and should also include the meaning if the value is false. If a data element may take another value to represent e.g. unknown or not applicable , then a Code should be used instead of an Indicator, and the meanings of all possible values should be clearly defined. The suffix Indicator is used in ISO IEC 11179 metadata registry standard as a representation term . Example of Use of Indicator in XML An example use of the Indicator suffix is if an XML document was required to contain the passing status of a Student in a statewide assessment. Unreferenced date December 2009 In metadata , the representation term code refers to, and is used in the name of, data element s whose allowable values can be represented as enumerated lists. Each enumerated value is a string that for brevity represents a specific meaning. For example, for a PersonGenderCode the allowable code valid values might be male , female or unknown . To be compliant with ISO standards a value meaning or definition must also be associated with each code. The ISO IEC 11179 metadata registry standard defines code as a system of valid symbols that substitute for longer values. In general, if the number of codes is small the list of valid codes and their definitions can be transmitted with a document that validates the data. Codes usually have a symbolic meaning that can be understood by a person. One example code is a set of two letter state code s used in a US postal address. The code MN represents the state of Minnesota. Its equivalent Identifier metadata ID using FIPS state code FIPS standards is the number 27 . The number 27 would be classified as having a representation term of type Identifier metadata Identifier and have the representation suffix of ID . Another example is the IATA airport code three letter international airport codes such as MSP for the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport. Although people use these codes to identify an airport, they would be classified as having a representation term of Code because they contain mnemonic information. Sometimes ... classified as a code. Unreferenced date December 2009 In metadata , dimension is a set of equivalent units of measure, where equivalence between two units of measure is determined by the existence of a quantity preserving one to one correspondence between values measured in one unit of measure and values measured in the other unit of measure, independent of context, and where characterizing operations are the same. The equivalence defined here forms an equivalence relation on the set of all units of measure. Each equivalence class corresponds to a dimensionality. The units of measure temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and temperature in degrees Celsius have the same dimensionality, because given a value measured in degrees Fahrenheit there is a value measured in degrees Celsius with the same quantity, and vice versa. Quantity preserving one to one correspondences are the well known equations C 5 9 F   &minus   32 and F 9 5 C     32. Units of measure are not limited to physical categories. Examples of physical categories are linear measure, area, volume, mass, velocity, time duration. Examples of non physical categories are currency, quality indicator, colour intensity Quantities may be grouped together into categories of quantities which are mutually comparable. Lengths, diameters, distances, heights, wavelengths and so on would constitute such a category. Mutually comparable quantities have the same dimensionality. Metadata modeling is a type of metamodeling used in software engineering and systems engineering for the analysis and construction of models applicable and useful some predefined class of problems. Meta modeling is the analysis, construction and development of the frames, rules, constraints, models and theories applicable and useful for the modeling in a predefined class of problems. The meta data side of the diagram consists of a concept diagram. This is basically an adjusted class diagram as described in Booch, Rumbaugh and Jacobson 1999 . Important notions are concept, generalization, association, multiplicity and aggregation. Metadatamodeling Concepts Image Mm31.gif thumb Fig.1 STANDARD, OPEN and CLOSED CONCEPTS Image Mm32.gif thumb Fig.2 Example of STANDARD, OPEN and CLOSED CONCEPTS First of all, a concept is a simple version of a UML class. The class definition ref Booch, Rumbaugh and Jacobson 1999 ref is adopted to define a concept, namely a set of objects that share the same attributes, operations, relations, and semantics. The following concept types are specified STANDARD CONCEPT a concept that contains no further sub concepts. A standard concept is visualized with a rectangle. COMPLEX CONCEPT a concept that consists of a collection of sub concepts. Complex concepts are divided into OPEN CONCEPT a complex concept whose sub concepts are expanded. An open concept is visualized with two white rectangles above each other. CLOSED CONCEPT a complex concept whose sub concepts are not expanded since it is not relevant in the specific context. A closed concept is visualized by a white rectangle above a black rectangle. In Figure 1 the three concept types that are used in the modeling technique are illustrated.
