    In the Deep is a 2003 song written and performed by actress singer Kathleen York , credited to her performing name Bird York. The song gained fame from its use in the critically acclaimed film Crash 2004 film Crash it also appeared on her album The Velvet Hour . In 2006 , the song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song . York performed the song at the 78th Academy Award ceremony on March 5, 2006. There was some question as to the song s eligibility, as it had appeared in the film The Civilization of Maxwell Bright as well as The Velvet Hour , both of which were released before Crash .
