He was a professor of astronomy at the University of Michigan. He was the father of the science fiction author Dean McLaughlin Dean B. McLaughlin, Jr. In 1954 he proposed the theory that there are volcano es on Mars and that their eruptions change the albedo feature s called mare The martian equivalent of Lunar mare . His proposal was partially confirmed in 1971 with the arrival of Mariner 9 , which showed that strong winds could move dust around the planet, creating the changes of appearance formerly attributed to some kind of vegetation http arxiv.org abs 0811.2700 . His best known work is Hawk Among the Sparrows 1968 , which was nominated for both the Hugo Award for Best Novella Hugo Award and Nebula Award for Best Novella . It concerns a late 20th century fighter plane which travels through time, and tries to contend with World War I aircraft. Dated 1812, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery London Benjamin Dean Wyatt 1775 1852 was an English architect. He was the son and pupil of the architect James Wyatt , and the brother of Matthew Cotes Wyatt . In 1811 he won the competition to rebuild the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane Drury Lane Theatre in London and wrote Observations on the Design for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane 1813 . He succeeded his father in the post of surveyor at Westminster Abbey from 1813 to 1827. He added a two storey north wing to Westport House in Mayo, Ireland in 1816 for 2nd. Marquess of Sligo. This wing contained staff accommodation and kitchen facilities. This was followed by a corresponding South wing of 1819 which contained a two storey high library surrounded with a mezzanine floor supported on cast iron brackets which gave access to the books. This wing was lost in a fire of 1826 due to the overheating of the technically advanced hot air heating system. The original Benjamin Dean Wyatt drawings of the library survive in Westport House. He designed the interiors of Belvoir Castle 1825 30 , including the Dining Room, Picture Gallery, Elizabeth Saloon and in the grounds the mausoleum in a Romanesque style. He founded the McLaughlin Carriage and McLaughlin Motor Car companies which later became part of General Motors . He was born in Cavan Township, Ontario Cavan Township , Upper Canada in 1836, the son of an Ireland Irish immigrant, John McLaughlin. He moved to Darlington Township, Ontario Darlington Township with his family in 1837. He married Mary Smith in 1864. In 1869, he set up a carriage works at Enniskillen, Ontario Enniskillen . McLaughlin also taught Sunday school in the Presbyterian Church in Canada Presbyterian church there. In 1877, he moved his business to Oshawa , feeling that moving to a larger urban centre with railway access was necessary for the growth of the business. He established the Oshawa Carriage Works, later known as McLaughlin Carriage. In 1878, he married Sarah Jane Parr his first wife had died of tuberculosis consumption . His sons John James McLaughlin John James , George William and Samuel McLaughlin Sam also became involved in the business. McLaughlin served on the board of health and board of water commissioners at Oshawa and also served as mayor. He was first president of the local YMCA . After a fire in 1899, he relocated to Gananoque, Ontario Gananoque but returned to Oshawa the following year. In 1901, he married Eleanor McCulloch after the death of his second wife. The company began making horse drawn carriages in the mid 19th Century, moving to Oshawa, Ontario in 1876. The most successful of their time, producing more than 25,000 carriages a year, the company incorporated as the McLaughlin Carriage Company, Ltd. in 1901. Under the guidance of Colonel Sam McLaughlin , in 1907 the company began the manufacture of automobiles, eventually forming an alliance for 14 years with William C. Durant , who had acquired the Buick Buick Motor Company that later would become General Motors Corporation General Motors Holding Company . The name was changed to McLaughlin Buick until 1942, after which the McLaughlin name was dropped, leaving the Buick marque still in use today. Until 1914, the cars were finished with the same paints and varnishes used on carriages. This meant each vehicle required up to fifteen coats of paint. In 1918, the McLaughlin family sold their interests to General Motors, but Sam McLaughlin would continue to run the company in his capacity as chairman of the board of General Motors of Canada, in addition to being vice president and director of the parent company.
