The story is set in the distant future where Earth and Mars on the verge of war. The last spaceship to leave Mars headed for Earth is suddenly stopped by Martian soldiers, looking for three saboteurs who destroyed a Martian city. They don t find them, and the ship continues towards Earth. On board the space ship, a business man by the name of Thacher meets a young woman and two men, who tell that they re in fact the people the Martians are looking for, and proceed to tell Thacher the story of how they did it, how they didn t destroy the Martian city, but used a device to reduce the entire city to fit in a tiny globe, which they smuggled on board the ship. The city was to be used as a bargain chip against Mars in the upcoming war, but at the end, Thacher reveals that he s in fact a Martian secret agent, and several of the passengers on board are Martian police. Publication history Conan collection Conan Lancer Books , 1967, later reissued by Ace Books The Conan Chronicles Sphere Books , 1989 Plot summary Conan has joined a band of warrior s from the northern country of Asgard and takes part in a raid against the Hyperboreans to the east. He is captured and enslaved by them but does not remain a prisoner for long. Escaping his chains and slaying his captors, he makes his way south, but is pursued by a pack of hungry Gray Wolf wolves . Armed only with a broken length of chain, Conan manages to fight them off until he is able to find refuge from the starving wolves in the hill s. There he discovers the entrance to a buried crypt and, finding himself in a chamber into which the wolves are strangely unwilling to follow him, Conan lights a fire and soon discovers a grisly occupant. Enthroned on a square boulder of black stone is the large mummy mummified corpse of a man, apparently a great warrior or chieftain of ancient times. Noticing a great iron sword that lies across the dead man s knees, Conan takes the weapon and claims it for himself. Image Cryptfalls.jpg thumb Crypt Falls The Crypt Lake Trail is one of the premium hikes in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta , Canada . It is accessed by a dedicated ferry service operating from the Waterton Park Townsite. The first part of the trail offers the choice of two alternate routes for ascent and return running through forest, the longer of which passes the impressive Hellroaring Falls . After that the trail becomes an open walk through a valley crossing small mountain streams and leading up to the spectacular views of Crypt Falls . The cascading Crypt Falls are over 150m high and are fed by Crypt Lake in the hanging valley above the falls. The last part of the trail is the ascent to Crypt Lake. This part is more challenging in parts the walk runs at the edge of steep drops, secured by cable and also involves crawling through a narrow, but short, tunnel. Finally the trail reaches the shores of Crypt Lake through a small forest. Most of the area around the lake is covered in scree and or snow, and hiking around the circumference of the lake requires approximately 45 minutes. Wildlife can be spotted in the mountains towering above. From Crypt Lake it is only a short walk to the edge of Crypt Falls with views over the valley below.
