The Army of the Shenandoah was an army of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War . Major General Kenton Harper of the Virginia Militia organized about two thousand volunteers at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia Harpers Ferry by April 21, 1861. Brig. General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson Stonewall Jackson of the Virginia Militia took control of the militia elements on April 28. On May 24, leadership then passed to Gen. Joseph E. The ConfederateArmy of Manhattan was a group of eight Confederate States of America Southern operatives who attempted to burn New York City on November 25, 1864, during the final stages of the American Civil War . In a plot orchestrated by Jacob Thompson , the operatives infiltrated Union American Civil War Union territory from Canada and made their way to New York. On Friday night, November 25, beginning around 8 45pm, the group attempted to simultaneously start fires in 19 hotels, a theater, and P.T. Barnum s museum. The objective was to overwhelm the city s firefighting resources by distributing the fires around the city. Most of the fires either failed to start or were contained quickly. All the operatives escaped prosecution except for one, Robert Cobb Kennedy , who was apprehended in January 1865 while trying to travel from Canada to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia . Recognizing its critical strategic value to the Confederacy, he successfully defended the fort against a Union attack led by Benjamin Franklin Butler politician Benjamin Butler in December 1864. In January 1865 Alfred Terry led a renewed attack against the fort and despite a heroic defense by Lamb and his garrison the fort was captured and Lamb was grievously wounded. He eventually recovered, becoming from 1880 to 1886 the mayor of Norfolk, Virginia as his father and grandfather had been before him. In 1900 he was made a Knight of the Order of Vasa , for his services as consul for Sweden and Norway. He died in Norfolk in 1909 and is buried there in the Elmwood Cemetery.
